War is Menstruation Envy---Gloria Steinem

Do you get scared when you hear the word, Feminist? What do you picture? Do you picture a bunch of butch dike biker chicks with chainsaws ready to chop off the next dick that pisses them off? That’s a tad harsh, don’t you think? Do you know that every word in the English language that has been used to solely denote women as been demonized. Harlot, Whore etc. used to just mean woman. Feminist is the new demonized word. ...more

Hillary's Disappearing Act: It's Not Magic!

When is Hillary Clinton invisible? Never.  Ms Clinton, not being the wallflower type, is a woman who likely demands her rights rather than asking for them.  She is the kind of woman who gets served first in coffee shops, even at eight on a weekday or who can get a cab just by staring hard at the next yellow light heading down the street. It’s hard to imagine her being overlooked. That is unless you happen to be Der Tzitzung...Continue...more

Walking Tall and Proud.

My name is Evelyn. I have been happily married to my best friend, Richard, for the last eleven years and together we have four beautiful children: James (9), Catherine (7), Olivia (5), and Emme (3). I am also the co-founder at a private organization that provides children with afterschool care. Throughout my years as a working mother, I have found one of my biggest struggles to be balance; but as a woman, that is one thing, you are expected to succeed in. I find myself in an odd position....more

Anonymiss: a new arm of the women's movement?

If you've kept up with events in the Middle East via Twitter, you've no doubt seen several different versions of a headless Lilith Sternin Crane-looking avatar floating around. If you've followed any of their feeds, you also may have found that the women sharing this image, and more who don't, are some of the best sources for information about the events happening in that region....more

Feminism - You're Doing it Wrong

"The reality is that women are treated differently by society for exactly the same reason that children and the mentally handicapped are treated differently. It’s just easier this way for everyone. You don’t argue with a four-year old about why he shouldn’t eat candy for dinner. You don’t punch a mentally handicapped guy even if he punches you first. And you don’t argue when a women tells you she’s only making 80 cents to your dollar. It’s the path of least resistance....more

I think you just summed up sentiments! Women still have a long way to go. Just this past week ...more

Alice Paul's Equal Rights Amendment Back at the Plow

Yesterday, March 22, was World Water Day. That got a modicum of press. But did you know it was also the 39th anniversary of the date on which Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) passed out of the U. S. Congress and was sent to the states to be ratified? Probably not. And yet, if there is a resource women need as much as clean water, it must be the guarantee of equality under the law. ...more

There are laws already enacted to protect against discrimination. If a new attempt to pass ERA ...more

Women's Day and Africa/Middle East

Until my second year in college, I did not know International Women's Day existed. But one day in March, as I walked the main thoroughfare across campus, a stranger with a bunch of flowers handed me a blossom with an informational tag and said, "Happy Women's Day." I was intrigued. I returned to my apartment after class, did some internet research, and discovered a holiday dedicated to advancing the political, economic, and social rights of women--a holiday so unlike the American Mother's Day, a day of expensive brunches, flowers, and cards....more

Worker's Rights: 100 Years After the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire

On March 25, 1911 a fire broke out on the eighth and ninth floors of the Asch Building in New York City, home to the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Workers, primarily young Italian and Jewish women who recently arrived in America, tried to flee the smoke and flames. Instead they were blocked by locked doors or emergency exits that opened into the room (and the crowd) rather than out of it. ...more

Triangle is one of the more horrific stories in this country's history. One reporter said the ...more
