 My stomach turns. 

 I don't mind him taking hits on FISA or campaign finance.  But this?  This is beyond ridiculous. 

 Will the next cover be a skank version of Cindy, the former (?) drugged-out, pill popper and the geriatric rage machine McCain with a walker complete with tennis balls for glide.  Yeah, I doubt it.

I get their point, that's definitely what the right wing has attemped to paint the Obamas as, but I don't think the display of it was correct. It should have been made more clear the point they were trying to make. It's just tasteless the way it's been presented.

 My issue with them is that this is sensationalism passed as Art and Freedom of speech. It's a throw back to the some other vile images depicting black people as something to feared.

I really encourage those of you who are as upset as I am to write the New Yorker. I would like to see their inbox flooded, so that they can be aware that their cheap apology doesn't cut it!

 This is irreponsible journalism at its finest and I hope that instead of this issue flying off the shelf it sits there....bringing them less revenue and more shame!

If the simple tagline "The Politics of Fear" would have been on the cover, I doubt I would have a problem with it.  Maybe I'm wrong, but that is how I see it. 

Bad timing, and poorly presented. I agree with Amy in Ohio about a tagline, or something clearer to show that they are skewering the Republicans and their smear campaign.

I am a subscriber and they have been consistently boosting Obama, and it's surprising to me that in this current politcal environment they would take this risk. If it opens dialogue, that's great. The magazine is a great source of in-depth analysis, which I prefer to bytes. And hey, new fiction in my box every week. I am not cancelling anytime soon over one cover.

I will stick my neck out and say that knowing what the NYer's usual message is, I think it's funny satire. I will be interested to see how they react to this, and how everone does.

While I understand the satirical element and the intention of the artist, the artist's intention is no longer important once the piece is released to the outside world. Only the viewer's perception of what it means truly matters.

I don't necessarily think the cover is racist, seeing as its a satire, however, the issue is that many people think that this is the TRUE Obama, and that's the problem. Many people (12% according to a new Newsweek poll), believe he's a Muslim (and if he was, what would be wrong with THAT?). Some think he used the Holy Qu'ran at his swearing in, and probably even more are scared of Michelle and her intelligence. So at best...this cover is very bad timing, and at worse, it's offensive to Black folks, to Muslims, and to intelligent Americans.
