"Get Jack Reacher"
By Flying Blonde on January 05, 2013
Date Night...the phrase strikes excitement in the hearts of parents everywhere. Spontaneous date night...better yet! After a long day of working, making dinner, and a late appointment, my husband posed the idea of going to a movie, a late movie. Gasp! I jumped at the idea of getting out of the house for a few hours as a couple. As people who usually fall into a sleep coma by 10:30 p.m., the prospect of going to a movie that wouldn't conclude until post midnight was an adventure. We agreed we could do this.
We kissed the kids and ran out into the dark and cold (so cold) night and were off to the theatre. The movies, we learned, was the place to be for the teenage crowd on a later Friday night. The tweens must have been the earlier wave of patrons and the night ushered in the noisy teens. Our particular theatre was full of them. This doesn't bother me. I like teens. I was a good teen. I'm the mother of a teen. Fortunately, they all behaved, save for two girls who were just plain loud and obnoxious, and were promptly removed by theatre personnel. "They don't mess around here," my husband whispered as the girls were shown the door.
The movie, Jack Reacher, (if you hadn't already guessed by the title of this entry!) was pretty darn good, I must say. As the theatre darkened with the promise that a hearthrob was going to appear, I heard a teen girl whisper (loudly), "Tom Cruise, he's so yummy." I wonder if she'd think he was yummy if she realized that he pretty much could be her grandfather? I kind of wish I'd asked her. I'm not the biggest Cruise fan but I will concede that he was great in this movie. There was very little swearing which is always attractive to me, but he was actually FUNNY in this film and good at it. I like a suspensful whodunit, and this movie was just that. Add humor and I'm sold. His badassness was stellar and I loved Robert Duvall's character. What a surprise (at least to me) that he showed up in this movie. Hope I didn't just spoil that for anyone!
Date Night is a must-have. If you're a couple and don't make it a fairly regular priority, you really should. I'm sure you've heard it before, but you really do have to date your spouse. Setting a date and making a plan and anticipating it is quite fun and exciting. Even if it's a two-hour excursion on the fly on a sleepy Friday night, do it. Go see this movie and then tell me if you could gnaw off all the fingers of your left hand in order to survive!
