Alrighty - so here it is. I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my second child, and my husband and I are talking about getting my tubes tied. The issue isn't getting it done vs. not getting it done - that's not up for discussion here. My issue is just getting information on it. Does it hurt? Is the recovery time long or difficult? Will they put me under for it, or am I going to be awake?
I've never had any kind of operation done, and to be honest I'm kind of scared. I'm more scared about getting this done than I am about childbirth. I could just really use some reassurance - any kind of reassurance. From what I understand, the more you learn about something, the more you understand about it, the easier it is to face.
So, if anyone has any information they would like to share, please do! PLEASE do! What were your experiences with this procedure like? Would you suggest it to someone else? How long ago did you have it done, and which procedure exactly did you have done?
I've still got a bit of time ahead of me to research this, and like I said, the topic is still on the table between my husband and I. We're still talking about it, but I will be honest in that it looks like I will more than likely get it done. But I would still appreciate any information anyone can give me. Please help me educate myself on this subject - as it's such a life-altering topic.

Hi Erin,
Thanks for your kind comments on my latest post! Just wanted to say that I opted for the Mirena as it is non-invasive and pretty much foolproof. If you want more information on that, you can ping me at angela[at]mommybytes[dot]com.

tubes tied
I had my tubes tied about 4 months ago. You know you're a desperate mom when you consider surgery a vacation ... I was out of the house for 24 hours!!! Surgery was pretty short. I think I checked into the hospital around 11am and left at 3 or 4pm. The surgery started later than was planned. I didn't feel anything because I was totally drugged out and put under. The recovery was not bad. I stayed at my parents' house (so I could relax), pumped and dumped (because I had a 3 month old at the time) and chilled out. I only took one pain killer after the hospital. My stomach just felt like I was sore from a bunch of sit-ups. Who knows - maybe they didn't tie my tubes after all - maybe they just used one of those ab stimulator machines on me. I have not had any problems since my surgery.
I looked into Essure, but I am just skeptical because it has only been around for about 5 years or so. Also, they put coils in you. Supposed to be safe, but I get enough junk in my body from the sweets I eat.
My husband did not get his wings clipped because, well... he would pass out and die. Literally. He is one of those people that gets faint in the waiting room of a dentist office. Almost passed out during an eye exam. So I took one for the team and I felt most strongly about not added to our team. Especially not down my chute. I have had 4 babies in 5 years and my body hates me. Our first baby passed away at 4 days old so we have 3 at home - see www.faithhagen.blogspot.com if you're interested in that story.
Did I mention I puke for all 9 months? Before I even knew that me and pregnancy would not get along, I had heart for adoption. We were actually in the middle of trying to adopt a little boy from the Philippines when accident surprise blessing (and she truly is) happened. So I was ready to shut this operation down and am so happy I did.
If I can handle another I will be stoked to adopt. In the meantime, I don't have the anxiety about the possibility of getting prego again. Hope that helps.

Tubes Tied
One of the previous commments mentions Marena...I previously had an iud and they are wonderful if you are not quite sure about making the forever commitment of sterilization but I went with a good old fashioned copper t so I didn't have to worry about the side effects from the hormones. If you are positive and are worried about recovery time you may want to also consider Essure. I had mine in June and other than spotting for a bit and cramps for a couple of hours I had no problems at all and went back to work the next day...I opted for the in office procedure with just happy pills but some drs do it as an out patient procedure under a general if you go to the site you can se how the drs in your area do it.

A girl in my office had her tubes tied the same week and was out for a week...
Also, if you happen to need a c section they can always tie them off while they are in there too but you would have to discuss that with your dr before the delivery to make sure they are aware of your wishes.
Thanks so much!!!
Thank you all for your comments - it's taken some time, but they are all very informative and helpful.
I think I've decided to go ahead and get my tubes tied. I've been carefully considering it over the last 5 weeks or so and it really does seem like the best option for my family. I, like every other parent out there, want to offer my children more out of life than I was allowed, and I know that I can do that with two children, but I'm not certain about more.
Anyway - thanks again for taking the time to help me make my decision!
recovery
I didn't really elaborate on my recovery, but wanted to let you know I was only sore for a few days. Then felt. Didn't resume exercise for a week though. But was back to momming after 24 hours.
