I've been keeping a running list -- it's right here in front of me. I cross things off -- housesitter, laundry -- even while I add things on -- stop the mail, more laundry, packing... Getting everything neatly tied up before heading out of town is time-consuming, but there's great peace of mind in knowing that things are all in order.
Solo Dot Mom has a to do list on Preparing for Vacation on a Tight Budget including...
Emergencies: Plan to take our emergency first aid kit we made for our hiking trips and it's stocked with plenty of over-the-counter children's formula meds and adult meds as well as "off" spray and sunscreen. (check)
Wiggle Room prepped the rig -- I've been there, done that, written the huge checks and while it was painful at the time, I was still glad I'd done it at home rather than in the Canadian Rockies.
We decided to take our car in for an oil change & a travel inspection since we'd be driving it across the country. We seriously needed new tires & a couple of other things done to it before it could make the trip, so we are waiting for a call from the shop right now so that we can go & pick it up. Although it cost more than we'd like to spend right before our vacation, it was pretty badly needed & we'll have a safer trip because of it.
Articulate Animals Blog posts about preparing your non-human companions for your departure, hey, someone has to water your bunny and walk your cat, right?
When the suitcases come out, your animals know that something is about to change in their world. Most will respond more positively when they are brought into the experience. Start with envisioning your departure with your suitcase in hand. Then visualize their experience, whatever that may be – a friend, neighbor, or caregiver staying with them in their home, or going to visit a family member or qualified kennel (yes, kitties can go to a kennel too!) – while you are away. Then envision your joyous homecoming, with everyone safe, happy, and relaxed.
There are lots of things that don't often get done before I head out -- I usually like to get a haircut and get the house nice and clean (coming home to a messy house is a drag). But I do always let the neighbors know I'm away (they're the best home security system available!), stop the mail, get my best pal lined up to check in on my housesitter from time to time, pay the bills, and pour vinegar in the drains (trust me on this). What's on your pre-getaway checklist?

Hey there Pam Timely post,
Hey there Pam
Timely post, thanks. I'm heading back home to Ireland in a few weeks time to visit my family.
It pays to be organised and even though it does take some time, you get on the plane and know that all is taken care off, well the important things anyway and you can just relax and have fun.
On thing I always do before I go is take a photocopy of my travel docs and credit cards and pack it in my suitcase, just in case. Never know, you could leave your wallet down somewhere in transit.
It happened to my brother, he left all his travel documents, passport & money in the bathroom in the airport and only realised at the departure gate...eek!

Everyone loves vacations,
Everyone loves vacations, whether it’s with our family, friends, or with our significant other. As Ann-Marie said, it’s best to be overly safe. Forgetting an important document is almost as bad as forgetting the new bathing suit you just bought for a trip to the Bahamas. Here are some tips to help ensure a safe, worry-free vacation:
1. Register oversees travel plans with the State Department online
2. Bring your passport, copy of your passport, and leave another copy with friends just incase anything happens to the first two.
3. Check to see if your medical insurance covers you abroad.
