Getting Through #Sandy: Reporting and Connecting During a Superstorm

BlogHer Original Post

The Political Impact

Just one week before the U.S. presidential election, President Obama and Gov. Romney both cancelled scheduled campaign appearances Monday. Romney's camp denied that he would abolish FEMA if he were elected. Meanwhile, pundits speculated upon Sandy's impact on the election.

The Outrage and the Humor

People vented about Sandy-branded sales:

Others made jokes -- including the hashtag #RomneyStormTips and an innumerable number of Photoshopped storm images.

But the clear winner of Twitter -- besides the first responders and the well wishers, of course -- was New York Mayor Bloomberg's sign language interpreter, Lydia Calas, who got a lot of adoration for her totally kick-ass, very animated signing of the mayor's emergency messages.
