Give a Dog a Bone

It all began on a wet and muddy Spring day, when Bojangles was given a bone.  Now, this wasn't just any old bone, (as Bojangles instinctively knew) this was a fresh, raw, meaty bone that needed extra special attention.

Being the thoughtful, clever doggie that he is, Bojangles didn't settle in to clean off his bone as most normal dogs would.   No... Bojangles knew this bone had to be preserved and savoured.  It had to be aged, and soiled, and become rank with that oh-so-wonderful scent that dogs love.

So... he gingerly lifted the bone out of his bowl then trotted around the house with it in his muzzle, whimpering with concern.

"Oh look!  He's crying!" exclaimed his foolish owner, "Perhaps he thinks it's a wounded animal!"

But when Bojangles gently laid the bloody bone on the living room carpet, then dragged the blanket off the sofa to bury the bone beneath, his antics took on a different light to his owner.  With a shrill screech and a firm hand on his collar, Bojangles and his bone were tossed outside.

Being the ever diligent dog that he is, Bojangles immediately set about digging a hole in the flower bed in which to bury his bone.  But worried that it might not be the perfect spot, he dug it back up, carried the bone to the vegetable garden, and buried it again.  And then he tried burying it under a big shrub.  And then another flower bed, and another, until the back garden was a mess of met mud and holes.  Sure that he had successfully foiled any attempts by any other critters to locate his precious bone, he proudly came back inside the house.

Bojangles, feeling very proud of his ingenuity.  Notice, his muddy nose?  Too bad you can't see his front paws!

After cleaning the carpet, washing the blanket, mopping the floors, raking the dirt back into the holes and bathing the dog, his owner forgot all about the DAMN bone.

It wasn't until much later, when the day was done and she climbed exhausted into her bed that she was reminded again of the bone.  You can just imagine the rise of emotion she felt for her clever pooch when she lifted her pillow to discover that Bojangles had slyly snuck the raw, meaty, muddy bone back indoors and buried it in her bed!

I have a new policy firmly in place - No More Bones! Squeeky toys are much more house (and bare feet) friendly.

I never could teach the puppy to eat her bone on a towel, so she always had to be crated until she was finished. What no one told me was those things are friggin' sharp when you step on them at 3 am on your way to take said puppy to the potty.
