Give It Up For Earth Day And Why I Am So Scared!

In honor of Earth Day I have decided not to buy anything new for the month of May.

deep breath

I know I am a ‘reformed’ shopaholic but that only means that I justify my spending by purchasing green products. I would say I don’t actually need about 40% of the things I buy. Not buying anything new is really scary! I’ve got 3 kids and they always seem to need something.

There are some limitations to this challenge, I can still buy some things new like food, toilet paper, and medicine. Other than that I will either have to buy second-hand or barter for what I need. Sorry to any birthday kids my children will be giving questionable gifts to in May.

My palms are a little sweaty.

My reasoning behind this is the “Give it up for Earth Day” campaign that Earth Day Canada is promoting. Go to the Earth Day website, click ‘get started’ and answer the questions according to what you plan to give up. Other options are no TV (not a big deal I rarely watch TV anyway), no toxic cleansers (already doing this) and eat a vegetarian or vegan diet (this is something that I feel like I need to ease into). If you look on the participants page and scroll way down, you’ll see me listed at Tracy G.

I first heard of the buy nothing new challenge from Kyle at Earth Day. He and his obviously very supportive girlfriend, have given up buying things for a full YEAR. While this is way out of the realm of anything I feel like I could carry out at this point in my life, it is a great source of inspiration.

I’ll keep you posted as May 1st draws closer. Will I be able to stick with my commitment?

Will you consider Giving it Up for Earth Day?
