With all the holiday socializing and the pressure to BUY BUY BUY going on, it can feel like you NEED to buy entire new wardrobe to get through the holiday party season. After all, you can't very well show up in the same dress to everything, can you?
Turns out that you can show up in the same dress to every occasion. You just have to accessorize.
I'm going to make this easy on everyone and focus on something you may very well have in your closet at this very moment: A simple black dress. If black dresses aren't your thing, these different looks can be created over a pair of black slacks and a black top or even jeans. The point is to explore the possibilities that accessories create for you.
Accessories are often overlooked or thought of as merely extraneous decoration -- which is too bad, really, because they can certainly help you express your style for much less money than you think. Instead of buying more clothes, try buying more accessories. It's much easier to mix high and low priced pieces, and experimenting is fun.
These looks are all built over the same dress. To illustrate the versatility of a simple dress, I've chosen the Just About Anywhere dress from ModCloth ($45)
First, let's start at the end. What to wear to ring in the New Year?
Not to be cliche, but sometimes you want to look demure. Like, say, when having dinner with the in-laws. Your simple black dress will come to the rescue! Just add rose shoes, a cozy cardigan and you're ready to dazzle.
With a Faux Fur Crop Jacket from Arden B., spiderweb tights from Free People, suede booties from Guess, a beaded clutch by Santi and a skull bracelet (just because) the conventional black dress is transformed into a backdrop for your fabulously unconventional look.
One dress, three completely different looks. And that's only the beginning.
