Gluten- and Nut-Free Appetizer

When guests come over, they're usually a bit peckish, so I like to have cocktails and appetizers at the ready. However, when I entertain my parents, it gets a bit tricky; my father has Celiac's (no gluten for him!), and my mother is allergic to nuts. Most appetizers are on a cracker, wrapped in pastry, or have hazelnut-laced chocolate, so I need to be creative with my choices, but at the same time present something that they'll enjoy. This recipe is quick, can be prepared in advance, and the recipe can be easily adjusted for a larger serving.

Prosciutto Wrapped Figs, with Goat Cheese, Honey, and Fresh Thyme

Yield: 10 Pieces

  • 10 Figs
  • 5 Thin Slices of Prosciutto
  • 1 Small Package of Goat Cheese
  • Honey
  • Fresh Thyme

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut the hard stem off the figs, and then slice an X shape in the top of each one (careful not to cut all the way to the bottom).


Push the slides to gently open the fig, and sprinkle a little fresh thyme inside. Fill the fig with goat cheese, and gently push in. Then, tear a piece of prosciutto in half, and wrap it around the fig. Lightly drizzle the top of the fig with honey, and sprinkle a more fresh thyme on top.


Place figs onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper, and bake at 400 degrees F for 8-10mins. Serve immediately.


If you want to prepare them in advance, do everything except drizzling the honey, then saran wrap and put in the fridge. When guests arrive, add your honey, and pop them in the oven. Super quick!

This recipe yields 10 pieces. It makes for a great appetizer, or chick-flick move snack with a bottle of wine (or two).
