Go GREEN on the Workout and Food Fronts!

Good afternoon! It's a gorgeous day in the City and for exercise, I did what I love! There is nothing like a round trip bike ride between 17th and 125th Streets to get the endorphins pumping. I didn't go at a killer pace, just enough to break a little sweat.


Why exercise outside? There are SO MANY BENEFITS:

"In a number of recent studies, volunteers have been asked to go for two walks for the same time or distance — one inside, usually on a treadmill or around a track, the other outdoors. In virtually all of the studies, the volunteers reported enjoying the outside activity more and, on subsequent psychological tests, scored significantly higher on measures of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure and self-esteem and lower on tension, depression and fatigue after they walked outside." Even though you may not be fully aware of it, the wind can provide an extra force for you to work against and several studies have found that runners and cyclists burn more calories while outside than indoors." I would also add that working out outdoors provides prime people watching (you'll be amazed at what you'll see on an outdoor bike or jog path!), an opportunity to sing your heart out without receiving the stink eye from anyone, ample dog encounters and what can only be described as that "Calgon take me away..." feeling, which is a good thing. Trust me. It's hard to hold onto anything stressful with the wind blowing in your hair and the fresh air in your face. You will love it! 

On the food and nutrition front, I just enjoyed a BEQU Sweet Greens juice along with a bun-less burger for lunch. I love this green juice brand because of its taste (not too sweet, definitely not too bitter) and price point ($6.99). I don't do full out cleanses but do like to have one of these juices a day. When making diet modifications, studies show that the mentality of "adding" and not "taking away" leads to success. So, you may want to think about what you can add -- for example, a GREEN JUICE -- to your meal plan as is before you think about what you are willing to remove. :)
