In my mailbox this morning: Body Solutions - Look better in a Bikini. I don't care how I'd look in a bikini. I won't be checking myself out in thong and bra in the changing room any time soon and I certainly wouldn't inflict such an image on the public at large. I didn't do that when I was in my twenties and won't be adding a bikini to my midlife wardrobe any time soon. What I do care about is how I look and feel and function in an everyday wardrobe and the answer is: better!
Midlife is full of nostalgia. Sharing memories of friendship,
laughter and school. Remembering the all-night study sessions, the
all-night parties and all the mornings after. Homecoming weekend and
final exams. Your first date, a marriage, your first child -- year
after year of life's greatest moments. Conversations at midlife are
filled with "remember when" and "back-in-the-day."
When I look back at the Good Health-A-Thon I think that I could have done more, that my partner and I could have done more. I think that we didn't set S.M.A.R.T. goals, that we really didn't set goals at all. I think that we didn't really give it our best effort. And then I remind myself that just because this is the end of the 2009 Good Health-A-Thon it doesn't mean that it's really over.
The beginning of January is undoubtedly the most popular time to make fitness and weight-loss resolutions. But if you think about it, trying to kick-start your motivation at the beginning of a new year doesn't make a lot of sense. At least that’s the case if you're anything like me -- the first few months of the year are when I tend to fall into my moody stage. It’s the middle of the winter, I’m anticipating the warmth and colors of spring...in other words, it’s not the best time for me to motivate myself.

Several years ago I made a point of tuning to the Oxygen channel each morning at 8 am., and giving myself a one hour workout with their "Inhale" program. When they stopped the 8 am. broadcast, I tried to make a go of the 6 am show. Six is just too early for me to be doing downward dog.

The BlogHer 2009 Good Health-A-Thon is coming to an end, but your good health choices can still continue. I hope we've been able to help you get on the right track to better health in 2009, I would love to hear how you've been doing in comments.
I thought I would take this opportunity to do a little wrap-up of our Good Health-A-Thon...
We started off talking about setting goals. Did you set any? Have you stuck to any of them?

annual physical
Though I went for a yearly physical up until I was eighteen, by the time I left for college, the annual check-up flew out the window along with bed times, flossing, and eating from all four food groups. Unfortunately, even though I now have kids and am enforcing all the rules from my childhood, I haven't quite returned to my general practitioner on a yearly basis. That needs to change.

"Namaste, Mommy."That's how my daughter Alex came home from her preschool one day last fall. She placed her hands in prayer position in front of her, and bowed deeply."Namaste," I responded, following suit. As I stood again, I asked her, "Where did you learn that?""From school," Alex answered. "Ms. A taught us."

In justifying why insurance companies charge women significantly more money for the exact same health insurance policies as men, executives claimed that women visit doctors more frequently than men do. Many people would note that this is a good thing, as experts have long praised preventative care as reducing the costlier care required for health problems that go unchecked, then blossom into serious complications. When it comes to my household, though, we like to flip gender stereotypes on their heads.

what to ask your doctor
Do you keep up with your annual checkups? We all know we should, but it's easy to come up with reasons to avoid them. Instead of ignoring checkups, try understanding why they are so important. Even better, know the right questions you should ask your doctor, and how you should expect your doctor to be communicating with you.

Are you depressed? In a bad relationship? Stressed out over the economy? All of the above? If so, you could be at a greater risk for heart disease.
There is a new study that links serious depression to sudden cardiac death in women. Depression linked to heart disease...
I love yoga. I love the idea of doing yoga. I love how I feel after doing yoga. So you would think that actually being motivated to do yoga would be a breeze right? Ha! Fooled you! While it's still easier to get myself to do yoga versus the much loathed exercise bike motivation does not come easy to me. Then I had a great idea. My boyfriend is pretty good about working out. All I had to do was convince him to do yoga with me and then if we did it together motivation would be easy-peasey. Right?
