A Good Way of Getting to Happy
By theprovidentwoman on June 19, 2011
Getting to Happy by Terry McMillan starts out with four best friends, Savannah, Bernadine, Robin, and Gloria, struggling in life around age 50. They all were hit with major D’s: divorce, depression, death, denial, and distress. The friends all go through major life changing events and they all have to work their way back to being happy. The book is their journey to that happiness. Finding new jobs, new men, self-reliance and sacrifice these women do everything thing they can to make their lives better and help each other on the way.
I greatly enjoyed the storyline of this book. The four friends crack me up. I often felt that I could feel their pain, worry, unhappiness and happiness. One part of the book that I struggled with and made it a little less enjoyable was the language. I felt that these were educated and successful women and they didn’t need to use so much profanity. It didn’t help the story line at all except where they addressed it themselves towards the end of the book.
The book started out very sad and depressing. I was afraid it would remain that way throughout the remainder of the book. I was pleased with how it progressed. The women all realized things needed to change and I loved all of their choices to get their lives back on track. One of my favorite parts of the book was that these women learned to let go of all of their hatred, anger or resentment for other people. Everyone should want to be more like that. It was overall a fun and enjoyable book if you can get past the language and it was hard to put down.
