Is Google Analytics for You?

This is the first in a series about analytics tools. In following weeks I'll also examine Woopra and Post Rank Analytics. We'll start off this look into the hows and whys of analytics with a look at Google Analytics.

Google Analytics is a free tracking tool that will help you understand how many people visit your site and what they are doing on your site. You find out what entry pages are most used, what page users were on when they left your site, where visitors came from both in a geographical sense and a referring link sense.

Elise Bauer wrote How to Build Blog Traffic – Search Engines and SEO, and it's a definitive explanation of what Google or any other analytic tool does to help you build your blog and understand your audience. If you've never read Elise's post, go take a look.

To get started with Google Analytics, set up a profile with Google for the website you're going to track. You get a unique ID, which is inserted into a code snippet Google provides. Paste this code snippet into your web page code and you're ready to go. SkinnyMinnyMedia has an excellent tutorial about how to insert the HTML snippet into a Wordpress or Blogspot blog in Tracking Your Blog Statistics with Google Analytics. A helpful video tutorial on Using Google Analytics is available from Thirty Day Challenge.

There is a lot of documentation and help available to get you going with Google Analytics, and there's Google customer support.

With Google Analytics, you'll get site usage information, bounce rate (how many people left immediately), average time spent on your site, average number of pages viewed, the number of new visitors and other helpful metrics. This is more than just a count of page views. This type of information helps you understand what works on your site and what your visitors are interested in reading.

It's the nature of a blog to read the most recent post and then leave. A blogger might not want a bounce rate report each day or week. With Google Analytics, you can customize your reports to track only the information you care most about.

Google has prepared a checklist called Get the most out of your report that will help you through each step from installing the tracking code to learning about features like keyword optimization.

With Google, you can add Google ads. The selling point for Google Analytics, from Google's point of view, is that the knowledge you glean from the metrics you collect helps you target your advertising more effectively. As you can see in this video on Google Analytics from Google, the emphasis is definitely on monetization of a web site.

Even if you aren't displaying Google ads, or any ads, the knowledge you gain about what captures the interest of your readers is helpful to you in planning new content and keeping your blog growing.

Google Analytics scales. It works on a mega-site but it can also work for a small site. If you have a mega-site, it would be a no-brainer decision to use it. If you have a smaller site, you might want to compare it with the two other analytic tools we'll be looking at in future posts: Woopra and Post Rank.

You're right. He's been sitting in front of computer screens for about 40 years now, practically since they were invented. I chose to invest my time a bit differently, mainly in areas that interested me, like writing! I think he and I both found our niches. But there are days I wish I found the tech stuff more fascinating than I do---but I'm committed to being at least functional in this realm!!!

Thanks for keeping me honest, Virginia.

Since you and your brother probably share a lot of the same DNA, I'm going to say that your brother probably spends more time in front of the computer playing around. If you spent and equal amount of time concentrating on your computer, you'd qualify as a computer genius, too. Don't sell yourself short.

Virginia:

Thanks for the help. I'm willing to play with the WP analytics a bit more and see if I can't surface more than I have. It's probably just a reflection of my infinite learning curve on all things technologic. Why did my brother the computer genius get to horde all of that DNA???

It looks like you have a self-hosted domain at flatrockcreetknotebook.com. The Wordpress directions I linked to show you how to insert the code for Google Analytics into the footer.php file in your Wordpress files.

If you didn't have a self-hosted Wordpress install (if you had something.wordpress.com) then you couldn't run any scripts. I find that very irritating, because I'm always wanting to embed YouTube videos on my First 50 Words blog, and can't. Unfortunately, Google Analytics require scripts to run.

It's not all bad with Wordpress. Did you know that you can dig down into the Wordpress stats by clicking on any underlined item in your stats? For example, if you click on Referrers, you can see referrers for various time periods from days to years. Looking at mine for the last year, I see that more visitors came to my site from BlogHer and StumbleUpon than anywhere else. There may be more to the Wordpress stats than you think. Start clicking around in them to see how far you can drill down.

Hope this was helpful.

I read this article and learned quite a bit by all you shared. After looking at Elisa Bauer's article, I'm left to wonder what advantages Wordpress.com offers. It seems so contraining in that you cannot add external widgets and now I learn you cannot add external analytics because they have their own version. Which would be fine if they weren't so crude. I can only lift out the most obvious info from the fundamental analytics they offer. Nothing about when people visit or if they bounce. Is that there and I just don't know it? Any help would be appreciated because I'm becoming increasingly sorry I chose this platform.

Feeling a bit shut down,

1) You can't open stuff in a new tab. So if I'm looking at a report and I want to dig down into one tiny piece but leave the main report open... I can't. (Talk about slowing down productivity.)

2) The overlay map doesn't always work and I really want it to work.

Should I go on?

It pains me to say it because I'd like to boycott Google but this is a tool I won't be able to walk away from.

It's just too cool. Too easy to use.

you consider it easy to install. That makes a big difference. Free, easy, and very helpful. A great combination of attributes.

it's helpful to a small blogger who writes whatever and isn't worried about making the blog into a business, right?

It's kind of a map of busy spots that shows you what people are interacting with and doing. Very helpful.

It's useful for businesses. On my personal blog, I find that I mostly just write whatever I want to write so don't really care "what works." I do try to optimize all posts.

This is one of the best things I've done for my site! It's so helpful to know what posts people are drawn to, where they are coming from, how they spend their time on the site. Plus, it's super easy to install and use. Love it!

Hi Virginia!

I just wrote a new blog post about what I've learned in blogging so far and I mentioned Google Analytics at least twice.

http://www.momentswithmegan.com/2010/04/my-first-3... ( http://www.momentswithmegan.com/2010/04/my-first-3... )

I love to look at the referring sites and searches that bring people to my site. I also love looking at the network providers and the map overlay.

You already know, but for anyone who doesn't, Google Analytics is a great tool to figure out how effective your blog's layout is. Just look at the site overlay and you can see how often people click certain links.

Ah yes, I love my Google Analytics! Thank you for these links, particularly the one by Google regarding the best ways to use the data.

The link for Elise's article doesn't appear to be working.
