Google Gives Blogger a Makeover

At SXSW Interactive this week, Google announced a refresh of the interface for its popular Blogger blogging platform. The software hasn't been updated in years, although it remains one of the most popular blogging tools on the Web.

Blogger Product Manager Chang Kim calls the refresh "our next-generation user interface." The changes will roll out over 2011 in stages, so don't expect to open up your Blogger blog and find it completely different in one big step. The user interface is the big news, but there are several improvements, among them new mobile themes and something Blogger is calling a 'content discovery engine' that “that lets you uncover interesting and related content based on the topics of the blog you’re currently reading.”

On the geekier side, the new changes will incorporate the Google Web Toolkit. This may not matter much to you if you're using a blogspot URL, but if you hosting a Blogger blog on your own server, this will mean you have more control over the features you can manipulate.

For everyday use, the interface will change to a sleeker and more up-to-date look. Here you see a new blog post screen showing the familiar older interface at the top, with the new look in front near the bottom.

The Dashboard will change as well. Here's the new Dashboard.

Blogger's new dashboard

At Free Technology for Teachers, the comment was made,

The new editor looks a lot like the Google Docs document editor.

Anna Leach at Shiny Shiny said,

They are smartening up the back-end of the site - making it easier to see what you're doing, and giving users a more intuitive preview of their work.

Google released a promotional video about Blogger.

Sarah Gooding at WPMU very helpfully listed the new features mentioned in the video.

  • The ability to easily customize templates without any CSS knowledge
  • Access to real-time stats
  • Improved spam filtering
  • Continued stability (The Blogger service has had zero downtime, according to Pingdom)
  • Inclusion of web fonts
  • A sleek mobile experience of the platform
  • Smart content discovery
  • Integration of the Google Web Toolkit

In an era when sites we've come to depend on (such as Flickr) are being neglected or abandoned by their owners, it's great that Google is stepping up to keep Blogger competitive and on the cutting edge.

I'd love to hear what the Blogger users among us think of this change. What's your take?

That's really exciting news, I can't wait!

I have been blogging on blogger since 2004 and have been seriously considering switching, but don't want to go through the hassle of leanring a new platform from scratch. Now I am excited to see the new changes.

I have 3 blogs on Blogger, but they're all blogspot.com's. At this point, I'm not sure the changes will affect me.

I use Windows LiveWriter for writing and scheduling and love it. I wrote in Blogger editor for about a minute. Couldn't stand it.

I use IntenseDebate for comments. I've heard preferences for Disqus but I'm not ready to make another change so soon after the move to ID.

It will be interesting to see what Google comes up with, however.

Heya - Blogger PM quickly chiming in here :) Yes we realize Blogger commenting leaves lots to be desired. Can't tell you when/how, but we do share the pain -- stay tuned for more developments there.

Gah! Figures this would happen just after I give up and move to Wordpress (the packing boxes are still in my header image).

I never could understand why they didn't use the same editor as Google Docs. Glad to hear things are moving forward. Maybe I'll go back and visit sometime :)

Great Summary of big changes I need to check out. My longest running blog, Build Peace - has been on blogger since 2005, and I need to check out what options will open for me and what other changes are afoot. Thanks for the heads up!

I concur about comments, but mine isn't a warm and fuzzy blog that has lots of comments, so the unthreaded comments only honks me off occasionally.

to all your comments about comments. (That was odd to type.) I looked around for a good way to let Google know what you'd most like to see worked on in the Blogger refresh, but haven't found a way yet.

Yes, comments are a big issue - I still have people who can't get their comments published - I also use intense debate on my main blog.
And I do find it annoying to have to go back n forth to get paragraph spacing correct - when I click on the pencil to edit from the blog, the editor is completely different to the one that comes up when I create a post...and it seems to change the layout.
I have never gone to wordpress and I'd like to stay with Blogger, but if / when i put it on my own website, I'd like more control, easier interface, easier interaction with readers...that's what it's all about!

I agree with what others are saying, as well. My fellow bloggers on WordPress and others, have options to have follow-up comments and replies to your comments on their posts sent to your inbox so that you continue a conversation. Right now, it seems that people have to stalk a post they commented on, in order to see if I or someone else replied to disagree or answer a question or even ask a question....

Wish they would have addressed that as well.

My main issue with not liking blogger (which I am using currently until I set up what I really want) is text moving around on me. My first several blog posts needed my constant revisiting to move text back into the order in which I wrote it. Now, the same thing keeps happening to my Pages, which I am trying to use in Tabs to organize my posts so that users can find what they are most interested in, no matter how old the post may be. Also, the seach gadget still does not work on most Blogger blogs, which is extremely dissappointing. Sad to hear that my two pet peevs with Blogger won't be addressed. They can gussy it up all they want but basic user concerns should be addressed first.

I'm pretty happy with the general blogger set up. The comment form and lack of being able to reply to comments easily is the thing I HATE. I tried a couple of the installed comment systems and settled on Disqus... although that gives me headaches too.

I don't understand why blogger doesn't update their whole comment system.

Blogger's comment system is impossible. However, I didn't see it specifically mentioned in any of the reports about what's changing.

My big question for you is... Have they overhauled the comment system? Because the main thing that would cause me to leave Blogger for WordPress is the ability to REPLY to comments, and thus create comment threads. I have installed Intense Debate for this purpose, but it's kludgey and wish Blogger had a better, more robust native commenting system in place.

Also I would need it to support the CommentLuv app, because I have that installed through Intense Debate and wouldn't to lose that, either.

I hope that they get that this is an important "want" for Blogger users, and an actual deal maker/breaker, because I'm kinda loyal and don't want to have to switch to WP as most of my friends have this year.

Thanks!
