Gotta Love The Hot and Hunky Men of "True Blood" (Spoilers, Video)

If y'all like hot and hunky men and you aren't watchin' True Blood, you might as well get yourselves to the local loony bin, 'cause the men of Bon Temps, Louisiana are smokin'!

Sunday night, True Blood kicked off its third season with a bang -- or rather a fang, since the show is a modern-day vampire drama. Based on the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris, the characters include a mind reader, a shapeshifter and a graveyard full of vamps, all living, loving and lusting, side by side.

And what would a vampire show be without sexy, dangerous, tortured vamps just waiting to be saved by a good woman? Forget those boys masquerading as men in Twilight -- True Blood's got the real thing. Here's a sampling:

Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer):

Vampire Bill is over 140 years old, having been turned during the Civil War. He and Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress with the ability to read minds, are Bon Temps' original human/vamp supercouple. Bill has the formal manners of a gentleman of the old south, and when it comes to Sookie is beyond protective off his lady love. But no sooner did Bill ask Sookie to marry him during last season's finale than he disappeared before she could say, "Yes." In Sunday's season premiere, Sookie had to enlist the help of Bill's rival, Eric, for her affections.

Eric Northman (Alexander Sarsgard):

Eric is the vamp sheriff of the Bon Temps territory -- and Bill's romantic rival. Last season, he tricked Sookie into thinking he was dying so she would drink from him. And we all know what happens after that: Sookie's tied to Eric and prone to having erotic fantasies about this tall glass of Nordic iced tea. Just to tantalize us further, our first view of Eric this season was from the rear. Um, er his naked rear. Sookie bursts in as he's having his way with a new dancer at Fangtasia, the local vamp hangout and Eric gets a kick out of showing Sookie what she's missing out on.

Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten):

Sookie's brother Jason is a down-home cutie pie who can't keep his pants zipped to save his life. More than once, that's gotten him into more trouble than he can handle. Last season he joined an anti-vamp church group, and eventually went all commando on them when their whacked-out fanaticism put Sookie in danger. In last season's finale, he saved the life of local lawman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) when he killed a crazed attacker. To protect Jason, Andy's telling everyone he did the shooting, but Jason's conscience can barely stand it.

In the funniest scene of Sunday's season premiere, Bellefleur tells Jason he has to act just like normal -- which, of course, means bedding as many women as possible. He tells Jason, "Conscience off, d**k on!"

Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell):

Sam is the owner of Merlotte's, Bon Temps' local bar. He's a shapeshifter who used to have the hots for Sookie, but after being spurned, had a fling with Sookie's best friend, Tara. Sam's a little bit on the scruffy side, but he's got his heart in the right place. Last season, to save the good folk of Bon Temps from an evil demon, Sam risked his life and had to drink from Bill to save himself. This season, he's on the hunt in Arkansas for his real parents. In the hottest scene of the premiere, Sam dreams about a shirtless Bill knocking on his door, asking to use his shower. Then, when he invites Sam to join him he says, "I hear the water in Arkansas is very hard."

Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis):

Lafayette is Tara's cousin, a cook at Merlotte's and a hustler of the first order. He's not above selling himself for a buck or trafficking in the illicit, pure vampire blood, known as "V," which humans use as a drug. He's got a smart mouth, a quick wit, and can put a hurtin' on rude rednecks quicker than you can say, "Well, shut my mouth!" Last season, after being kidnapped and suffering torturous trials at Eric's hands for selling "V,"

I like Bill's formality,'cause it just makes him such a proper gentleman. At least outside the bedroom.

And it's still possible some other Big Bad got to that old lady after Bill left. We'll have to wait and see.

It's back, but I confess I still cover my eyes at the sex scenes. I think it's usually overdone.

I wish Bill were a little less stiff. When he told Eric last season that he was going to tell the Queen on him, I laughed. Eric could swat him easily. He sounded like a fly.

However, I like how they remind us a vampire is still dangerous. Even a nice guy like Bill will glamor an old lady to suck her blood. Props to him for leaving her some money, but when he left without closing the door I kept expecting a werewolf to run in and finish her off in that quirky dark humor way.

I'm glad Lafayette's still on. He has a much bigger role than originally anticipated, I think, because he's become so popular.

The new guy, Joe Manganiello as Alcide Herveaux, is my speed. ;-)

Between the view of Eric's rear and Sam's erotic dream about Bill--woo wheee! Someone hand me a cigarette!

Nothing better than getting our butts down to Bon Temps for some steamy True Blood action every summer. I have not missed a single one since it first premiered. BTW, vampire Eric's rear view was the highlight of the season opener, in my humble opinion. Hooray for HBO!

Great post Megan!

I saw a snippet of "Being Human" but haven't had the time to watch on a steady basis.

Sorry you guys won't get "True Blood" for awhile, but at least you have something to look forward to!

Oh we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. If I found myself in Bon Temps, I'd be gettin' bit every night of the week!

I would have definitely included Eggs (Mehcad Brooks, pictured below) but he's gone from this world--more's the pity.

LOLOLOL

I do not watch True Blood. I have not read the Sookie Stackhouse books. I don't like hot and hunky men.

I do however like your descriptions of the hot and hunky men.

Tall glass of Nordic iced tea??????? hahahahahahahaha

We have to wait ages over here in England for series three. Meanwhile I'm left re-reading the books, daydreaming about vampires, and waiting for Eclipse to be released at the cinema. It's nowhere near as good, but it's a vampire fix.

Have you seen Being Human? It's a British tv show about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost - it's brilliant!

My biggest problem with True Blood is the lack of hot vampires. I mean vampires are supposed to be hot but these dudes just don't do it for me. The only hot guy on that show was Eggs.
