The Government Shutdown: What's Shutting Down? Does It Affect You?

Barring a Hail Mary budget, at midnight tonight, we're going to find ourselves in the middle of a government shutdown. But what, exactly, does this mean? The last two government shutdowns came in 1995 and 1996, and we can predict a bit how this one will go based on what happened back then.

When the government shuts down tonight, non-essential government employees will be furloughed without pay. They are not supposed to work during this time period, even on a volunteer basis. Which means that even if you aren't a government employee, you will be affected by the shutdown because services will cease to exist. For instance, if there is a park that requires an employee to be there in order for the park to operate, the park will be closed during this time. (This affects all "394 national parks across the country.") The Smithsonian and the National Zoo will be closed to visitors.

Our DC trash collection and street sweeping will be stopped. Mail WILL be delivered. Your tax refund may be affected. Getting nervous?

Required Reading:

  • The Washington Post has done a great job answering all the questions you might possibly have about the shutdown in a Q and A guide.
  • DCist has a fantastic A-to-Z guide.
  • Alaska Dispatch has broken down the situation into the basics.
  • MSNBC has a guide.

What are your thoughts on the impending government shutdown? Are you affected? Please let us know in the comment section as well as add a link (using Mr. Linky) to any blog posts that you are writing about the shutdown so we can feature you here.

I wish I believed that crisis was averted last night, but...I don't.

While I think the shutdown is a really bad thing, it's the reality of the situation. I could make noise about how Congress should have done a better job on this, but we're here now. And given the choice between eliminating funding to Planned Parenthood for womens' health NOT abortions is an issue worth sticking on. Planned Parenthood likely saved me from unplanned pregnancy in my early twenties by providing me access to affordable birth control. As a federal employee, I support them financially by donating a half-percent of my paycheck to them, and I am willing to support them by not working for a few days. I can handle it--I'm not sure other women across the country can do without the reduction in services that Planned Parenthood would get if the social conservatives win the p*ssing match.

Additionally, it's time for the President to throw down and assert his authority. No more reindeer games, please.

We are a 1.33 income family, and the 1 of that is a federal government contractor. My partner has some vacation time banked, so if they settle this in the next ~week, the impact on us is mild inconvenience and significant anxiety. More than a week, and we start having to cancel vacation plans later this year. More than 3 weeks and we are a 0.33% job family. Probably obviously, our family of 4 can't live on the $650/month of my graduate assistantship.

We're DoD contractors - the threat of shutdown has already negatively impacted our business.

We are not directly affected by it, but my younger stepsons' family is.

I'm outraged, and even more disappointed in our leaders than usual.

I'm a federal employee. Most of us just want to do our work, and we're being told not to because of arguments completely unrelated to our responsibilities.

The ineptitude of congress right now is ruining my love for them.
Seriously this is infuriating and unnecessary on both sides.

We are not directly affected by this, but the whole thing makes me so sad! I will keep all of these families in my prayers!

My fiance is an air traffic controller and is currently at the air traffic control academy in Oklahoma City. He'll still get paid because air traffic control is considered necessary but his academy instructors won't so he'll be gone at least another week :/
