They were old, too old, really, to hold my hand—10 and 11 years old. But I remember walking with them both, one holding each hand. Two blond heads bracing my gray mop in the windows we approached. I remember feeling those two hands in my hands, watching the reflection, thinking that this was a perfect moment in my life, walking from the car to the entrance of Target with these girls beside me.
Ten has always held my hand—cuddled, snuggled, wanted a kiss goodnight. To her, I'm another mama. It's silly, but holding her hand in parking lots is one of my greatest pleasures.
But 11 grew up miles away from me. She's just getting to know me, has to be told to hug me and doesn't demand a kiss at bedtime.
This time, this June day in the Target parking lot, when I had them both beside me was special. Getting 11's hand in mine was unusual. Her strong, square hands with their thick bones so different from 10's slim and delicate hands. I wanted a picture of it, an iconic moment, grandma with two girls in a frame on a shelf somewhere in my house. An ordinary summer day, an ordinary trip to Target, but shining and vivid and meaningful beyond the ordinary nature of it.
We walked, we entered Target, we bought Bella Sera trading cards with drawings of horses. But my heart was somewhere back in the parting lot in that place where we shared a timeless connection for a few seconds.
I've mentioned my grandchildren here a few times, but thought leading today's post with a story about them would introduce me as a granny blogger. This is a new genre of blogging that I think needs more members. If you are a granny blogger and talk about your life with your grandkids in your blog, announce yourself to us in the comments.
Here are some bloggers I know about who mention their grandkids a lot. I'd like to increase the size of this list about 1000%.
- A Little Red Hen
- The Joy of Six
- Grandma Henke
- Play Wit Me Nana!
Here are a few resources for grandparents.
- Grandparents Support Website
- Grandparents Parenting (warning, hard to read italic font)
- AARP Groups (search for a group, there are several for different aspects of grandparenting)
Let's hear from the granny bloggers.
