Gravatar: What it is, and why you should use it
By maranda on September 26, 2011
Gravatar is a service that gives you a universal avatar across blogs and other community sites. When you see blog comments with photos beside the commenter’s name – like on this blog – chances are it’s powered by Gravatar.
It’s a free service and easy to set up. No crazy account creation screens, just enter your email addy and pick a password. After that simply upload an avatar and you’re done! You can upload an image from your computer, from the internet or take a new one with your webcam.
Managing your account is easy. Gravatar will store multiple images for you; if you want to change your avatar at any time just log in and upload a new one. Your old ones will still be there if you want to change it back later.
Using a Gravatar powered avatar makes you instantly recognizable around the internet. This is particularly important if you’re a blogger, small business owner or heavy social media user. [ProTip: you should use the same avatar across all social media websites so that you're easily recognizable]. If you own a blog there are plenty of Gravatar powered plug-ins to enable avtars for your commenters. And even if you’re not a blogger yourself, if you’re a frequent blog reader and commenter having a Gravatar makes you identifiable in your network. It’s easy to set up and it’s free, so take a minute and give yourself a face to go with your voice!
