The Grazie/ Give Thanks Holiday Project: Help Others + Win Gift Cards
I think part of why I love saving money so much is because of where I come from. I am not from wealth and my parents were very frugal. What many of you don't know is my own personal background, and why I am starting the Grazie Project this year.
I chose the name Grazie because it means "thanks" in Italian. I am part Italian, my grandmother from Italy, and this name seemed appropriate!
Years ago, my parents were getting divorced and my mom couldn't afford groceries for weeks at a time. While we had some family helping us, it wasn't enough. The time I remember the most was when all we had was crackers and Kool-Aid in the pantry. With Thanksgiving approaching, my mom, in shame and despair, ordered one of the free holiday meals from our local food pantry. I remember them delivering it to our house and how happy my sister Em and I were.
Later on that winter, my mom couldn't afford to pay the heating bill, so we had many cold winter days, where we had no gas heat. My mom would heat up a meal in the electric oven, just to get the house warm a little.
After this experience, I decided to pay it forward every chance I got. I donate to food pantries on a regular basis. I've helped out at my church. Here are a few blog projects I've worked on with companies like Operation Christmas Child, Giving Comfort and more.
I'll be accepting donations via Paypal in any amount, along with collecting applications for people who need help. Everything is anonymous. I'll be choosing 25 families to help this holiday season, to help make their holidays a little brighter. My goal is to send $50 gift cards to each family, so I'll be needing to raise $1250. If we get over $1,300, we'll be able to help more families!
How Do I Donate?
100% of your donation will go to a family in need. Give $5, give $50, however much you'd like, with every dollar counting, so please give what you can. Please send your Paypal donation to firstname.lastname@example.org. I'll be sharing their thanks with you all later this year!
How Do I Apply?
The 2013 Grazie/Give Thanks Project is open to all families, who'd like some help this holiday season. If you need help this year, please send an email to me, email@example.com with the following info:
