The Great Gatsby Review
"In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars."
"I hope she'll be a fool--that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Ok, first things first. I think my top three books of all time are 1. Anna Karenina 2. Wuthering Heights 3. The Great Gatsby. I have been waiting and waiting since I saw the first trailer for the movie. I have been waiting and waiting for this weekend since Christmas due to the fact TGG was supposed to come out on Christmas Day and was pushed back. I have been on the fence about Leo since Titanic. I think he's handsome and other times, meh. He was every girl's dream when I was 18. And seeing him on the screen as Gatsby made me feel like an 18 year old girl all over again. He was so handsome. I'm not sure if it was the clothes, the tan, or the way he carried himself as Gatsby or what, but I think he was a great Gatsby! He was exactly as I imagined Gatsby to be. He was over the top, but once the truth was out, he became vulnerable and humanized. I think this might be one of Leo's best performances!
I think what I really didn't like about the movie was the lack of chemistry between Leo and Carey Mulligan. I just didn't feel it. The Daisy I picture in my head is beautiful, tragic, selfish, and I feel that Carey just didn't get that across on the screen. I just felt to me as if there was no spark. That's just my opinion. I think everyone else was well cast. I thought the actress who played Jordan was superb! And Tobey Maguire was great as Nick Carraway. He was just I have always envisioned that character to be. And Tom, I think whomever he is was great as well. I'm still on the fence about Isla Fisher as Myrtle. I think Isla is like the girl next door and not a mistress-trampy sort. So, it was hard for me to envision her as Myrtle.
I didn't watch it in 3-D. I think I'd like to go back to a matinee to catch it. I'd really like to see it in that perspective.
I came out of the movie indifferent about my experience. I liked it, but I didn't like it. I don't know how to describe it really. The costuming was amazing and the music, at first, I didn't like it, but now, I do. Oh, I don't know how to go about describing such, but I think I feel mostly like what is written in this review.
