Thanksgiving is coming, and you know what that means... holiday shopping is about to get ugly. If your piggy bank is looking a little empty this year, you're not alone. We've all been doing some pretty mournful shaking...

The good news is, there are plenty of great things you can get for all the kids on your list that ring in at $10 or less. I know because I've spent the past six months combing through them!

In my "real" job, aka, my non-mommy job, I work for Education.com, where each year we pick the best gifts for each grade, from preschool through high school. Believe me, it's pretty hard to find compelling things for less than the price of most restaurant hamburgers. Here's a peek at some of my favorites for kids in first and second grade:

personal trading cardsPersonal Trading Cards

This site gives him the chance to create trading cards with all his vital stats, for swapping with fellow superstars. Upload a photo, put in your info, and get your cards in the mail in no time!

Hover Hockey

Arcade-style fun for a rainy day, this simple home hover hockey game features a gliding puck that's almost as good as a real air table.

Rocket Balloon with Pump

Bring this to the park at your own risk: no kid in a one-mile vicinity is likely to leave you alone. Simple, inexpensive, and an outright joy to use, this toy brings smiles to even the most jaded kids on the block.

You can see the full list of best gifts for each grade, or better yet, steal the widget and put it up on your own site.

What were your favorites from that blog? Always on the hunt for cool science things for my son!

ahh I LOVE these.  I did a recent blog about good science and historical gifts, but did not even think about prices!

We gave a rocket balloon kit to a friend of my son's as a birthday present. It actually took over the party. Really funny watching the expressions on all the kids' faces as the balloons spun around!

Thanks for commenting :) It was really fun going through piles and piles of this stuff. A lot of it was junk, but I think we really found some gems. I was a little nervous there for awhile-- after we said we'd find so many gifts under $10, but actually, I was pretty surprised by how far it can go sometimes...

The rocket balloons were a great hit with my kids last year, especially when they coerced daddy into doing it (okay, no coercion necessary, aren't dads all big kids?).

Going to check out the air hockey!
