photo by jfonono"So what'll we do for supper?" ~~~ "I don't know. What are you hungry for?" ~~~ "Steak? Seafood? Thai? Indian? Bosnian?" (Yes, St. Louis has Bosnian restaurants, thanks to a decade of immigration.) "Greek? Yes, let's go Greek!" I knew that my excitement for a casual dinner out was inspired by reading two favorite Greek food blogs, one in ... um Alaska? and another in ... err Toronto? Meet Laurie Helen Constantino of Mediterranean Cooking in Alaska and Peter Minakis of Kalofagas.

This week, both Laurie and Peter caught my attention with briam, what Peter calls the "Greek answer to ratatouille". (And thanks to last summer's Disney movie, we do all remember what ratatouille is, oui oui?)

Peter's version of briam florinis calls for layers of potato, eggplant, zucchini, onion (whew!) along with red and hot peppers, tomatoes and yes, oregano (Greek, please).

Laurie's version is a mix of briam and mechouia. She pan-grilled the vegetables and used a spice mix of coriander, caraway and crushed red pepper.

Both sound amazing -- if there's no getting reservations at the Greek place a few miles up the road, perhaps we might wrangle invitations from Peter and Laurie? Perhaps they'll treat us to traditional Greek specialties (Peter's) and authentic Greek specialties (Laurie's).

Mama's Taverna ~ Zoe isn't of Greek descent but is inspired to write about Greek food because it has changed her life.

Thanks for including Mama's Taverna, Alanna!  I'm the non-Greek among the Greek food bloggers, and I'm always thrilled to be included with them.

I'm Lulu from Mama's Taverna, Zoe is my Greek friend, and Zoe's Mama is our ultimate authority, food-muse and disciplinarian. :-)

If you love good Greek food, come visit Melbourne, Australia.  We have the third largest Greek population in the world so getting a good Greek feed around here is blissfully easy. So easy in fact it's one cuisine I rarely cook. Although those blogs may make a change to that...
