I am currently working with a group of enthusiastic people to make our town
Torquay plastic bag free. Tonight we kicked off our campaign with a movie
called Message in the Waves. The film is based in Hawaii, and shows how a
group of dedicated and amazingly connected people are working to save their
islands from the onslaught of the world's plastics.

If each of us woke up each morning and had to wade through a knee-high deep
pond of plastics, we'd probably change our approach to plastics and
packaging. Fortnuately for us, we don't (in the short term) - but this is
pretty unfortunate for those directly affected right now - namely wildlife.

Just because we can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there! Australia uses
6.9 BILLION plastic shopping bags each year. A UN report from 2006 (and
that's a few years ago now) estimated an average of 46,000 pieces of plastic
debris floating on or near the surface of the water for every square mile of
ocean. Animals that can't discern the difference think this is food. And
this is bad. It is also very, very sad.

If you've got a spare few minutes, watch a couple of the excerpts to the
right hand side of this link http://www.messageinthewaves.com/facts.php. If
you have 50 minutes, download the entire flick from the same site and
rethink the next bit of plastic you buy. Awareness and the choices we make
can make a powerful difference.
