My husband is away for the next two weeks (minus the weekend in between) due to schooling for a promotion at work. As such, I'm solo parenting for the next ten days. It's okay. I'll survive. I always do.
Last night before he packed up his laptop, however, we set him up with a Skype account and tested all settings. The plan is to either have a video conference before bath time (the start of their bedtime routine) or after they're bathed and jammified and ready for a story. We don't know which will work best yet so we'll try both over the next two nights. I think it will help both boys. They may be used to him being gone every third day for 24 hours but it's been over two years since my husband has been gone for an extended period of time.
It got me thinking about grandparents and cousins and other various family members. Do you video conference (with whatever software/hardware you choose) with anyone in your family? Did you have to help them set it up or were they savvy enough to do it on their own? Do you do so at a regular time (once a week) or just whenever someone mentions it?
If you don't do it yet, do you think it would be a welcome idea by your family members? I'm thinking of suggesting that my parents next computer contain a webcam so that we can utilize this function. (They're looking for a new computer as we speak.) I may purchase them a webcam even if their new computer does not include one.
