Do Your Kids Have Digital Cameras?

In a great post by Susan Getgood on how to achieve "harmonious" Thanksgiving day pictures, I mentioned that our son has our old point-and-shoot digital camera. In the post she had suggested to give children disposable cameras. That wouldn't fly with my budding photographer. And, yes, I know he just turned four.

He's been snapping pictures on our old point-and-shoot (Fuji FinePix s5100) for almost a year now. Any time we go somewhere special or even sometimes just on a walk, we take his camera along so he can take some pictures as well. Before we went this route, we researched the heck out of "kid digital cameras" and decided against it. The picture quality was also heinously low and I guess being the son of a professional photographer does something to a kids' brain because we tried one out in a store and he said, "What's wrong with that picture?"

Well then.

I let him take a few pictures with my big dSLR when he showed an interest in taking pictures and then decided the heart attack wasn't worth it when we had a camera collecting dust in the closet. When we decided to give him our old camera, which I wrote about here, we set down some rules. He has yet to cause it any harm, almost one year later. We have great shots from various parties, get togethers and our vacations from this past year, all taken from his vantage point. I love it. As a side note, we were never going to use that camera again ourselves. We had a dSLR and another (more recent) point-and-shoot at that point, in addition to our camera phones. We've added another point-and-shoot to our arsenal since then. Our younger son keeps eyeing it. Not yet, Bubba.

Anyway! My question: do your children have their own digital cameras? A friend of mine bought some decent quality but cheap (non-child) digital cameras for her kids last year and they've been shutterbugs all year. (They take my picture EVERY TIME I come over.) Have your kids enjoyed them or not?

And can I get an AMEN for NOT wasting film! WOO!
