We don't watch a lot of TV in our house. Our watching happens mostly on the weekends, especially during football season. But we're sitting watching games last weekend and Sophia, our almost 6 mo old, is just staring at the talking heads on the TV. And I have to admit, it makes me a little nervous. Am I turning her brain into mush by letting her stare at a television for a few minutes? When we're watching a movie, we'll turn her away from the screen. And I have made a point to NOT turn on any of the children's programming. I just think she's too young to be glaring at the boob tube, even though it has been mighty tempting to plop her down in her swing in front of the giant screen, knowing that I could use that time to, oh, do something fun like clean. Or laundry. Or comb my hair for a change.
My question is, when did you start letting your kids watch TV? Maybe I'm a little more paranoid than most. Scott's sixteen year old son (who lives with his mother) basically has had unlimited "screen" time for the past six years (since Scott's divorce). I see what it's done to him in terms of creating a child who is largely uninterested in anything remotely connected with exercise or socialization. I'm not about to let Sophia go down that road. It was different when I was a kid, wasn't it? Yeah, we had TV and even a (gasp!) Atari and Nintendo, but my parents never had to put limits on any of it. We were more interested in being outside, playing games, riding our bikes, etc.
I know my daughter is going to grow up in a completely different environment, and it scares me a little. And I know this is probably a pretty basic DUH question, but I'm completely new to this whole parenting gig. Thanks, guys!
