You've all seen the kids carrying those huge book bags in the halls of the schools. Maybe your children bring home a truckload of books each day (my own kids were never that studious, but it's beside the point). I ache for them when I watch tiny kids struggle with a mountain on their backs...it has to take a toll on their growing spines.
At a school last week, I heard a teacher speculate that the Amazon Kindle might replace school text books in the next ten years. What do you think? I can see the advantages:
- It would save the aching backs for those children.
- All their schoolbooks would be in one tiny package.
- It would reduce the number of trees cut for paper.
- When a textbook is revised, the newer version could be downloaded quickly.
But, I also see some problems:
- The cost of the Kindles, expecially if borne by the parents, could be prohibitive, although it could be used throughout their school careers.
- What if, Heaven forbid, they lost their Kindle? They wouldn't be able to keep up with any of their classes, and replacing one is much more expensive than a single book.
- Children would never develop the manual dexterity to cover a book!
As a parent, what would be your preference? Schoolbooks or Kindle, which way should it go?
