How to save money on groceries

Three years ago as I sat reading blogs, a light bulb went off for me.  I light bulb that told me I had been throwing money down the drain and that there was another way.  A way to save a significant amount of money on my weekly grocery bill and I wouldn't have to starve my family to do it.  I wanted to learn more and the more I read, the more I got excited about what I needed to do.

Three of the major changes I made were spending a half hour every week menu planning, making the majority of my meals from scratch and utilizing coupons where possible to maximize my savings.  I was able to cut my grocery bill in half.  Just like that and if I can do it, anyone can.  I previously blogged about menu planning and how I do it and if you're interested, here is all about WHY I do it.

Today I'd like to address the coupons because boy is this a money saving art to be had.  Those that get the hang of it and do it consistently are saving themselves big amounts of money.  Here in Canada, and my little community, coupons play a much smaller role for me but are still vital when I can get them.  I use sites like Save.ca and GoCoupons.ca and they definitely help.

As for those living in the US, I'm going to let the real experts help you out:

One of my favorite blogs, Money Saving Mom, hosts Super Savings Saturdays each week.  You have got to check out how these ladies do it.  Take a look at the almost 200 entries, very impressive!

Making it really easy, sites like Coupon Cravings, the Grocery Coupon Guide and Moneywise Moms find the deals for you, posting them as they become available in order to save you time and money.

Jessica from Life as Mom has so many great posts on how to save money on groceries.  In fact she calls herself a grocery geek and you'll soon see why.

The Stretching a Buck site won't leave you disappointed either.  Read through her Coupon 101 Series for a pile of great information and I think you'll also like How to Save Money on Groceries as Prices Continue to Rise.

The Digerati Life shares Coupon Tips and Tricks That Can Cut Your Grocery Bill by 80%.

And finally, if you really aren't into coupon clipping, the Kitchen Parade teaches you how to save money on your groceries without couponing being the main focus.

What a great list of resources!

I had no idea there were so many online coupon sites and that all these clever bloggers had so many tips.

Now that I don't read the newspaper every day I don't see as many coupons, and I hadn't really thought about checking around online for them.  What a great way to save money!

It totally fascinates me

I'm always amazed when I see the dollars being saved, very motivating!

This must be fate

My kids are now both in school so I decided to make an effort to watch for coupons, etc. Great links. Thanks. The gift card would rock.

Thanks

I'm honored to be included in such a great group of money savers. Thanks!

Thanks for the link, Laura!

Thanks for the link, Laura! By mastering some grocery shopping strategies, including your meal planning, I've been spending an average of $400/month for all my groceries, household and toiletries for our family of 5 for almost a year now--and I live in the high cost-of-living area of Washington DC. It has made a huge difference to my family's budget and affected how I shop for everything--clothing, shoes, etc.

Great links

Thanks for the links. I'm always looking for ways to save at the  grocery store.
