A question about patterns

Mostly for knitters but I'm sure it's applicable to crocheters iin a way as well.

How do you keep track of where you are in a pattern? I've done patterns where I can tell just by looking where I am, but I'm thinking more of those that have something like a 10-row repeat and each row is slightly differerent than the one before it. Ones where it's difficult (unless you are a super master knitter) to figure out what row you are on.

Do you use a notebook? Do you use a row counter? Stitch markers?

I really want to know!
