How Often Do You Feel Unsafe?

How often do you feel unsafe in your everyday lives, at work, at home at school?

I don't often feel unsafe and I suppose part of that has to do with feeling my home is secure, my workplace is fairly secure and when I go out, I take as many precautions as I can while still enjoying myself.

However, the other day I felt very unsafe.

I'd had a group of people over to my house and at the end of the evening, I planned to drive one of my guests home.  Several of us left my house at the same time and it didn't occur to me at the time, but I wasn't the last person out of the house.

So after driving my guest home, which took about an hour round-trip, I got home at 1 AM, took out my keys and walked up to my front door.   I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw my front door actually open about two inches.  I'd left all the lights on in the house, so I could see the lamp by the door and the lights from the other downstairs rooms shining through the windows.

All kinds of thoughts ran through my head about someone having broken in, but my instincts told me one of my guests, whoever was last out of the house, had left the door open by mistake.

Operating on that premise I cautiously crept inside and listened.  After hearing nothing and seeing nothing disturbed I quickly went through the ground floor, the basement and the upstairs until I was satisfied that no one was in the house.

I breathed a sigh of relief, set my house alarm and went to bed.

That was the last time I felt unsafe.  How about you?
