Guest Posts: Are You Writing Them? Are You Accepting Them?

Ann Smarty got me interested in the idea of guest posts for my blog. I've written guest posts for other people's blogs (such as Time Goes By), but I've never had a guest poster on my own blogs. When Ann mentioned MyBlogGuest in Ann Smarty, SEO Expert, Shares Her Secrets, it made me wonder if I was missing a bet. In that interview with Ann, she said,

I have also recently started a new project aiming to help guest bloggers to find blog owners accepting guest posts. The site is MyBlogGuest, and it's a free-to-join community focusing on guest blogging and everything around that.

BlogHers are talking in posts and chatter mentions about guest posts they've written in large numbers on BlogHer. The blogs in the BlogHer Network show a constant stream of guest posts.

Popular blogs outside the BlogHer Network, for example ProBlogger, use guest posts regularly. How to Build a Blog Network from the Ground Up by Elle is an example at ProBlogger. At ReadWriteWeb, Laura Madison wrote the guest post The Dark Figure of Social Media: What Can Twitter Teach Criminologists?

It makes perfect sense for big sites like ProBlogger and ReadWriteWeb to want guest posts. The more good content you have, the better off you are. But what about small niche blogs that are essentially a one-person operation? Can guest posts benefit the little guys, too?

I decided to explore MyBlogGuest to see what I could find. On the home page, the site lists these benefits for blog owners:

  • Get free exclusive content
  • Get free targeted traffic
  • Network
  • Get new fresh perspective

I registered and explored the site for a while. I didn't have any posts written that I could submit to be published on someone else's blog. I found one I thought would be a good fit for my blog and sent off the request to use it. The request was accepted and I published the first guest post on my blog the next day.

The first guest post on Web Teacher

After 10 years of blogging on the same topic, I'm relieved by the prospect of guest bloggers adding good content to my blog. Now I'm off to come up with a post of my own that some other blogger will want to publish. To promote a post free at MyBlogGuest, describe it in the forums. For a pro account at $10 a month, users can enter any post to pitch and it would show up in the Articles Gallery. I don't plan to do that, but will try out the free method via the forums.

The whole prospect is kind of invigorating.

Of course there are many ways to go about finding and promoting guest posts besides using MyBlogGuest. My arrangement as a guest poster with Time Goes By started with an email from the blogger, Ronni Bennett. I receive email from folks who want to publish guest posts on my blog regularly, too. When I look at what they are offering, it never quite fits, so I haven't tried it until now.

Are you one of the many BlogHers already doing this? How did you get started? What are your results, your thoughts, and your tips?

and agree that your system of blogging with another person works for you. Have you tried inviting someone else to do a guest post?

I think the guest blogger idea is great. It's good to have variety in voice, style, content. I feel very lucky to have a blogging partner. We are united in our mission/vision, but our voices, perspectives, and taste are very different, and it shows in our content. I like to think we deliver more audience appeal this way, not to mention the fact that we balance each other out and keep the momentum up. When one of us is pinched for time or inspiration, the other steps up. Granted, we've only been at it for nine months and 90+ posts, but so far, so good!
Best,
Cynthia

I've enjoyed having guest posts on my blog from other bloggers I read. It's a good way to bring attention to their sites, and it gives me content I didn't have to come up with. Win-win!

What I don't know how to handle are the "professional" guest blog pitches I get a lot, from sites that write guest posts to get linkbacks to a specific site (usually not a blog) that's not spot on in terms of the content and direction of my blog. I haven't used any yet but wonder what people's thoughts are on those. The guest posts are authentic writing, but the intent to me seems off, and I'd worry my readers would see it as a paid post, even though it's not.

How timely! I just went on vacation for the entire week and scheduled friends/guest bloggers to cover for me. It seemed to go really well! Lots of comments, lots of visitors, and I loved having the new (but relevant) voices showcased on my blog. I would definitely do it again.

I also enjoy guest blogging for other people when I'm asked. It's neat, like visiting another place without even leaving your seat!

to post on my blog. There are two bloggers who's posts knock my socks off and so three times I've invited them to guest. I tried not to be jealous when one of their posts got more hits than any of mine ever did.
I don't make money from my blog but I take it pretty seriously and try to give content that is compelling on a variety of topics. Having read your post, Virginia, I definitely plan to do this guesting more frequently and in a more thoughtful way. Thanks.

...that I call them a guest blogger when most do not have a blog! LOL.

I guess it is just giving people a platform to speak and be heard. Often times they want to be anonymous too...or have no need to be identified.

On our blog, we look for different perspectives or different voices on various topics other than our own. So guest bloggers are important to us.

Currently, we are doing a series on Hatred and Healing. We had a guest blogger on Tuesday and will have another on Thurs as we jump into this topic using different issues and perspectives. We do not always have the first hand experience of what we want to write about, so we go to those that do.

I will usually tell a guest blogger what the topic is and gave a summary of our perspective and ask them if they would care to join the conversation. IF yes, we tell them when we want to publish the post and give a deadline for them getting the post to us. Usually, I will tell them about how many words we are looking for. Once I get their post, I edit it and send it back to them for their approval usually titling it myself.

The Whos is written by two women and we negotiate and write back and forth for every post, so guest blogging is just an extension of this...only guests are responsible for their own content.

I get emails at least once a week asking if I want the person to be a guest blogger on my blog. No, I really don't. The content never matches my niche. It's like PR people who don't even read my blog and send some pitch that doesn't match my family at ALL. It's ridiculous.

I don't really think I would utilize MyBlogLog either. My niche is my niche.

I guess what I meant by deadlines is that people did not write posts in a timely manner. For instance, someone had attended an auto show and was going to write about that (I have a news blog). He did not get around to it for about two weeks after this event occurred. By then, it seemed almost dated.

For more general subjects, this might not have been such a concern. In my professional life, I am always enforcing deadlines with students, but that's not something I want to have to do in the same way with my acquaintances and friends.

Virginia, it was great to hear from you again and even more exciting to see you join and get enrolled!

Huge thanks for sharing your experience here! I hope MyBlogGuest will be embraced by BlogHer community!

Yes, guest blogging has its pros and cons. The main drawbacks is that it is ahrd to scale and full of spammers.

On the other hand, if you are afraid of spammers, you better not start a blog in the first place, right? Spammers are everywhere!

Guest blogging is exciting! I strongly recommend you at least try. It's a great networking tool as well awesome method to promote your blog.

Good luck!

I get around the deadline issue by having people submit their posts to me completed, and THEN I schedule the post, not before.

I don't have guest bloggers on my personal blog, certainly, but when I started The Mom Food Project, it quickly became obvious to me that part of what interests and invigorates me about my project is hearing from other people about the foods of THEIR childhoods, not just my own stuff. So I started with a guest poster early on, and now it's a formal part of my website: http://www.momfoodproject.com/contribute

I solicit guest posts from friends and relatives when I’m on vacation and unlikely to have internet access or just want to take a break.

My friends usually rise to the occasion; after all, they’re my primary readers.

They also tell me they like reading something from a different voice, different perspective. So yes, I think guest posts are a great way to enliven a blog.

I have been an occasional guest blogger, and in the distant past, had a few posts on my own blog by a guest. My hesitancy is twofold: quality and deadlines. When I attempted to open the blog to guest writers in the past, it was difficult to get the point across that Wikipedia would not be an acceptable source and that if we agreed on a draft by Friday, I really meant Friday, and not two weeks later.

With that said, I have seen this work well in other places, and I think I could be more proactive in seeking writing from those who have shown themselves to write in a style (depth, knowledge, voice) that I respect.

Thanks for writing this and bringing the concept back to the front of my mind.
