This is breaking news: I hung up my family’s laundry this morning.            I know it’s not such a big deal – really – but I felt very green.I also felt very torn. It took me about 30 minutes and a lot of the time – when I wasn’t feeling very ecologically correct – I was thinking, you’re supposed to be a career woman! You’re supposed to be writing! You’re supposed to believe that your mind is too precious to waste! What’s become of you in this age of feminism – you’ve gone back to being a laundress! You might as well become a wet nurse while you’re at it!I know that lots of women hang their laundry and write Pulitzer-prize winning works, but I fall into the trap of thinking that I should just throw my clothes in the dryer and get back to my work!It amazes me how even the slightest chore comes with so much background stuff. And the down side of hanging clothes is they get that stiff feel to them, like putting on a piece of cardboard. Then I think, maybe I’ll just put the clothes in the dryer for five minutes to let them fluff out…Then I kinda forget they’re in there! But it was nice with the sun on my shoulders and the laundry on the line and the birds chirping and thinking I just reduced my carbon footprint – for today at least!
