Have Fun!

Recently, my coach told me to "have fun!" before my swim workout.  I realized that I really lost track of why I was training for an Ironman.  I know I want to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, and I know I want to be on the podium, and I know that I want to eventually become a professional triathlete, but sometimes I forget why I even started at all.

I started working out because, it's fun! I have always loved being active.  At the age of 5, I started doing Jane Fonda with my mom, because it looked like fun.  I played and tried lots of different sports, gymnastics, baseball, soccer, ballet, swimming, tennis, basketball, you name it, I probably tried it.  I didn't do those sports because I had to, but because I thought it was fun, and I wanted to try it.  I have always enjoyed moving my body.  As kids, we naturally like to be active.  We play on swing sets, jungle gyms, play tag, four square, etc.  It is naturally to "work out", so why do people stop? Does it become a chore? It's another thing on the "to do list"?  It becomes something we "have to do"?

I challenge you this week to tell yourself before you workout, or go into the office, etc. to "have fun!". Having fun, isn't just about exercising, but also work, life, family, friends, etc.  You don't "have" to go out to dinner with a co-worker, you don't "have" to go into work, in fact, everything you do, you choose to do. Ask yourself, "why, did I choose this?" Hopefully, the original answer is because you thought it was fun! Try to bring yourself back to that place, it will really change things for you.  Most of how we feel, has to do with how we think, so if you complain, and tell yourself that something "stinks", or "you don't want to do something", you are taking the fun out of what you are doing.  We all know, that even if we are doing something we don't "want" to do, when we make it fun, it's really not all that bad.

I hope you all have fun this week!
