Have a Spare Kidney To Share?
By Jill.Grun on February 29, 2012
I'd like you to meet my friend Maura. She's a Cleveland-area native and lead singer of the band Maura Rogers and the Rusty Souls. Maura is amazing. She is this slight, petite woman with a powerhouse voice. She is full of life and energy. Love follows her wherever she goes: Love from her friends and family, the love she radiates herself. When not performing with her band, she works for a non-profit that helps troubled children and their families, creating a safe and postive environment where they can learn and grow.
Maura also only has one kidney. And that one kidney is failing.
You wouldn't know it to look at her, but her health is deteriorating and she needs a new kidney. She's on the National Donor List, which means she's eligible for a cadaver kidney if one becomes available, but a kidney from a living donor would be so much more beneficial to this amazing woman. Visit this site for more information on the benefits of a living donor.
All it takes is a phone call to the Cleveland Clinic at 216-445-3150 to find out if you're eligible. And the phone call itself takes less than 10 minutes: I know because I made it myself. I also know it's asking a lot, to consider giving up a kidney for a woman you don't even know. But I promise an entire community of people will be forever indebted to you for that priceless gesture.
It's an expensive process, both before and after the surgery. Because of her health, Maura also has to miss days of work and not all of her medical bills are covered by insurance. So those of us who know and love her are also trying to help her out financially. A benefit, Beanstock, was held last Saturday. Raffle prizes were offered from local businesses, musicians and poets who know Maura from the open mic scene provided entertainment. The tavern where it was held was packed with people who love and support this woman, and while a lot of money was raised, there is no such thing as too much in this case. So, if you are willing to help out financially, please consider sending a donation to Maura Rogers c/o Bob Sammon / PO Box 935 / North Olmsted, Ohio 44070 and tell her Jill sent you.
