Have a Very Seussical Read Across America Day!

BlogHer Original Post

It is not merely a coincidence that Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday both fall on March 2. Back in 1997, when the National Education Association came up with the idea of a day to celebrate reading, they decided that they could not think of a better date to celebrate it than on the birthday of the much beloved children's book author. This year we we have even more to celebrate as The Lorax hits theatres across North America.

I love Dr. Seuss' books. They appeal to the random and whimsical side of my personality. I had almost forgotten how much I loved them. Late last year, my husband and I traveled to Orlando and visited the Universal Studios Island of Adventure theme park. He was in Orlando because he was attending a conference and I was there because Orlando in November is a warmer than Ottawa in November. There was no way I was leaving town without going to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and getting my hands on some butterbeer.

While we loved visiting Hogsmeade (and the butterbeer) what surprised us the most about the Island of Adventure was Seuss Landing. It is, admittedly, aimed at fairly young children but as I mentioned above I do like whimsy and Seuss is totally whimsical. There are far too few things that really make me remember just how magical a place childhood is and being surrounded by Seuss' creations did just that for me. There were whozits and whatits galore. Meeting the Cat in the Hat and The the Grinch didn't hurt either.

After we returned from our trip we began to rebuild our collection of Dr. Seuss books. The books that we enjoyed as children have long since vanished. We're picking them up at library sales and thrift stores. Sure, we could order the whole collection online but part of the fun is the thrill of the find.

While I'm certain many people will be pulling out their copy of The Lorax to read before seeing the movie, I'll be celebrating with my copy of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Here's a look at how some other bloggers are celebrating and some suggestion for what your family can do this March 2.

Candace is having some fun with the Lorax smartphone app and you must click through to see those cupcakes. I want them! I kind of want a Seussical lapbook too.

Do you crochet? Find out how to crochet your very own Lorax anigurumi. So cute!

Raid your art supplies and make a Seussical city like the Madtown Macs.

Save Green Being Green has your Seuss playdate ideas.

Cricket's Daily Fix is keeping with the The Lorax theme and planting a tree.

And finally, if you are not a fan of Dr. Seuss I have not forgotten about you. Say it Rah-shay is one of your people and she can tell you how to get Seussed when you don't want to.

Have a very happy Read Across America Day!
