It's getting cold outside, but you should still try to get out in the sun for a few minutes each day. And taking a walk outside to burn off some of your excess holiday calories is a great way to do that. It's good for your health too.
Did you ever wonder why the sun makes you feel good?
It's because the sun actually triggers an increase in the "feel-good" chemicals in your brain (serotonin). Serotonin helps control sleep patterns, lift your mood, and even increase your sex drive.
Sunlight also helps the body to make its own vitamin D, which is crucial to good health. Vitamin D not only makes strong bones and healthy teeth, but it also keeps the immune system working, increases energy, and sharpens you mentally.
So...Don't let the cold weather keep you inside this holiday season.

Must have sun
I've always lived in the sunny southwest and know I'll always stay here because I love the sun, the light, the sky, even the shadows. Must have sun.

What if it hasn't stopped snowing in about 2 weeks and right now at 4:11pm it looks like bedtime? :( Haha! I joke that I was born in the "Sunshine State" and my body craves more than most people up here in the NORTH! Maybe I'll google some sunny pictures and try to "SOAK" it in!!!

fresh air
I agree with the idea of how important it is to get outside and into the sun, but I would have to go further and say how therapetic and healthy it can be to just get out and into the fresh air even when it is not so sunny! After living in the mountains for over a decade I have definitely learned first hand how important to your health it can be to spend some quality time outside in the fresh air!

I love getting my fresh air at the beach...
Hi Amy. I totally agree. I love taking a walk on the beach...I get my sun, my fresh air, and the sound of the waves hitting the shore is soooo calming.

How cold is too cold?
I totally agree with the need for sunlight. I'm in balmy Minnesota, and have been out walking the dog with my 9-month son in the stroller, wearing several layers of clothing and a couple of blankets. This seems like a really dumb question, but am I going to know when he's too cold? I don't want to just wait for signs of frostbite, obviously...

I Love the Sun
I've lived in several parts of the US and traveled to many countries and I can say without a doubt that I love climates where it is warm and the sun shines for a good portion of the year.

We are just starting to protect ourselves
from sun..
here in australia its finally starting to feel like summer... i'm digging out my sun hats and the heavy-duty sunscreen.
Next weekend I'm going to the beach! So no lack of vitamin D here. Soon I'll be leaving the curtains shut during the day, to try to keep the heat out.
I love CA
I couldn't see myself settling down permanently anywhere else. The sun definitely makes a difference in my mood.
@Kara: I agree, ask your pediatrician, but 2 cents from a non-practicing MD: we told patients that in hot weather your kids should be wearing one less layer than you, in cold weather one more layer. Also, in cold weather, make sure kids are wearing hats (since most heat is lost through the head) and their extremities are covered well.
You can look at your son's lips and fingernail beds to check capillary blood flow; those areas should be pink, not grayish or whitish. When in doubt, follow those maternal instincts and take him inside.:-)
