Have You Ever Used Only Cash?

Ever since the advent of the debit card, I've had trouble keeping cash in my wallet. Not because I'm spending it all necessarily -- but because I never have it. I never get it out of the bank. And when I do get it out of the bank, I've noticed I hoard it, as though it is somehow different than my debit card. It is not, in fact different. What gives?

Andrea noticed this strange truth when she tried to go on a cash diet. She writes:

There’s something about having ACTUAL cash in your wallet that seems to be making a difference here. And to part with it a bit at a time, seeing the number of bills get smaller and my coin compartment get fatter (and having to dig around for coins at the cash register) that really puts things into perspective.

Yes, I try and use cash and cut down on using my debit card. Cash is easier to keep track of too!

We pay bills with checks but everything else is cash. And it's a huge money saver.

I pay bills with my card but use cash for pretty much everything else. I don't do checks....ever.

I will be soon if they start charging $5 a pop to use your credit card. I bet I won't spend as much.

I pay all the bills for the month than what is left ove I divide by 4 weeks and use only that amount for each week. Most stores love it when you use cash saves them money too. and it is a great bargaining tool

I've been using only cash for just under 20 years. It also keeps me from spending money I don't have.

That's what I always do. I don't even have a credit card. My husband has a debit card we use sometimes.
I budget my expenses very carefully and make sure there is extra for things like birthday presents, bridal shower presents, new cleats, Halloween costumes and accessories.
Sometimes we go without. Not food, of course.
I have my bills all mapped out at certain times of the month that they are due.
I think I learned this from my very frugal parents who used credit cards only in a true emergency.
My kids see me as well. When the money's gone, it's gone.
We don't spend money we don't have.

DH use to have cash in his pocket all the time. He'd simply cash his check, separate what needed to be saved for bills vs spending cash. I on the other hand never have cash on me. My check was direct deposited so I was always using my debit card. And I found that easier. I spent less if I had to use the card.

When the banks start charging to use the debit card, it will be strictly cash for me. Although I heard a suggestion this AM, use your charge card instead of the debit card and when you get home, pay the card what you charged.
