The NFL is on to something! They have launched this great new campaign called NFL Play 60 where they are encouraging kids to play each day, every day for at least 60 minutes. The idea is to promote a generally overall healthier lifestyle. I think it's genius and I say, "don't let it stop there!"
I am a self proclaimed kid at heart. I also have a five year old daughter who helps keep me young when she's not giving me gray hair. I am a big proponent of play. I think it serves so many purposes in life but as we get older, we forget how to play. We don't make time for it, we wear ourselves down or we just plain lose interest being because we're a "grown up."
What if we all decided that we were going to play 60 minutes each day, every day? What would that look like? How would our lives be different? How much positive energy would we create? I think kids are not the only ones who can and should take advantage of the NFL's challenge. As adults, we need to add movement, live better and laugh more. We can be responsible adults and still have fun in our lives.
Imagine finishing your day off and instead of heading home to crash on the couch you take your dog to the dog park and play a game of fetch. Maybe you get up on Saturday morning and play hopscotch and jump rope with your kid. You can go for a walk and let your mind wander. You'll be healthier, stronger and less stressed.
My boyfriend and I, not wanting to cart all our gifts back to his parents house in Iowa, just exchanged Christmas gifts with my family. He got me a Wii which delights me to no end. I get to play! I can easily set 60 minutes aside to play Wii tennis or Wii boxing. It makes me giggle like I'm 9 and I can't tell you how sore I am from trying to knock out a cartoon character that looks exactly like The Dude from The Big Lebowski. It's a solid workout.
Let yourself play. Rediscover what made you smile as a kid. Don't be afraid to be silly. Dance with your iPod. Bounce on a trampoline. Swing on a swing set. Hula hoop. Skip. Play kickball. Play dodgeball. No kid required, but they sure would be happy if you have one that wants to play with you.
What are you going to play this week?
