Have Yourself a Not-So-Basic Black Christmas
By The Sunset Manifesto on December 25, 2012
Ahhh, the holidays. Nostalgia fills the air and twinkling wondrous romance seems to be around every corner…or, if you’re like me, the holidays are anxiety-provoking and the animatronic reindeer on your neighbor’s lawn is mocking you with every flicker of its neon red nose. If your reason for the season is less than festive, glittered consumerism; perhaps jewel-toned satin holiday couture is simply not destined for your walk-in this year. Instead, consider glamorizing your basic black with dramatic silhouettes and a little holiday glitter.
The fraction of me that houses a romantic has my holiday memories and hopes winding through my mind in a grainy, black and white montage of cinematic romances: It’s a Wonderful Life and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. My childhood holidays were spent curled up on the couch with my family watching a continuous loop of old classics. So, on the heels of purchasing Lady Gaga tickets, on the verge of some holiday “mean reds,” and with renewed images of Audrey Hepburn skipping through my mind, this holiday black ensemble modernizes one of the most iconic little black dresses.
