He Gets It from Me

Hmmm…where to begin….

Well, I guess I should start by telling those of you who don’t already know, that I am a bit…ummmm, how should I put it?

Oh, let’s just be honest…I’m a bit anal about certain things.

The cookies on the cookie sheet have to line up properly. I like them to cool in neat little rows. And don’t you dare take one out of the middle of the cooling rack without at least replacing it so they stay orderly!

I used to label things, but I got teased a lot so I stopped doing it.

I can’t explain it, I just like some things a certain way.

Now, if only I lived my whole life like that, I would have an immaculate house, remember every thing on my to do list, and I would never be late. Sadly, this trait only to applies to certain things and, much to the dismay of my dear husband, it’s rather random. Go figure.

Enter the mix and match dishes. Oh…while I love them, they present an issue for me. My instinct is to put them away by color. It makes sense, it’s pretty, it’s organized.

The first time I was putting them into the cupboard, Neil sweetly commented that the whole point of mix and match is that it’s random and they should be all mixed up.

Taking a deep breath, I remember then removing them all from the cupboard to mix them up. I was so proud of myself. I could do this and I truly had no niggling desire to go back and undo my “mixing.”

When he opened the door to the cupboard to take out a plate for the first time, he just started to laugh. I hadn’t even noticed but in my attempt to mix them up randomly, all I had actually done was alternate every other one. There was no randomness at all and still very orderly.

Over the past couple of years, I have since worked my way towards just putting things in the cupboards any which way. Secretly, I still generally try and have equal numbers of each color in each stack but I don’t try an organize them nearly so much anymore. I’m letting it go.

Or I was…

Until last night.

Neil and I had lingered at the dinner table last night talking and the boys had gone into the kitchen to unload the dishwasher and get it ready for me.

After a while, my youngest, with a huge grin on his face, pokes his head out of the kitchen and was waving enthusiastically for me to come join him.

He was so excited, I couldn’t help but go and see what he was up to.

As I came into the kitchen he opened up the cupboard with the dishes in it and he did this whole “TA DA!” bit urging me to look at his handy work.

This is what greeted my when I peeked in…

He looked at me and asked "doesn't that look better, mom?"

I didn't even know what to say to him. My heart melted right there on the spot.

I just smiled at him, gave him a huge hug and said "thank you, little man, it's perfect."

I don't think I could have loved him more than I did in that moment.

The dishes are still that way now and I'm sure as hell not going to be the one to mess it up for him.

My husband hasn't noticed yet and I'm just waiting to see if he says anything.

Actually, no, I know he'll say something, I'm just waiting to see how long it will take. And I have my response all ready for him.

I know...he gets it from me.
