Health Query: Are E-Cigarettes Safe?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is really occupied these days. They’re thinking of, and probably already working on, rules for selling electronic cigarettes. With many doctors complaining about the rising use of e-cigarette smokers, perhaps the FDA should hustle. But are electronic cigarettes completely safe?

They’re not. To begin with, no electronic device that contains a battery and a heating device is a hundred percent safe. Add to that the nicotine it contains and you have an addicting gadget. However, many believe that electronic cigarettes are much safer than any type of tobacco cigarettes.

 Electronic cigarettes: Blessing or bane?

To Vape or Not To Vape

Although there is no tobacco in e-cigarettes, they may still come with risks. But for people who would rather lose a limb than give up smoking, e-cigarettes seem to be the lesser evil.

However, this does not mean that e-cigarettes should be advertised and sold without regulations, something that is still happening today. Without regulations from the FDA, there are no rules to follow.

Many doctors (myself included) fear that the visual reminder about smoking that e-cigarette ads provide intensifies one’s craving to smoke – even that of actual cigarettes. This means that advertising of e-cigarettes just  might boost actual sales of tobacco itself!

E-Cigarettes: What the Experts Say

Experts are divided when it comes to the safety of electronic cigarettes. While some say it is way better than actual tobacco, others fear that it is just another addicting gadget used to replace a previous addiction.

Studies have shown that there may be cancer-causing substances present in e-cigarette smoke, such as nitrosamines and diethylene glycol. “But that’s better than the many other chemicals present in tobacco,” others may argue.

E-cigarettes are definitely less of a nuisance to non-smokers as their smoke is not as irritating as tobacco smoke. Of course, despite the fact that e-cigarettes have become more acceptable to the non-smoking population than traditional smoking, its safety remains a matter of debate. For now, all we can do is surmise based on the evidence we do have – at least, until the FDA steps in.

Do you think electronic cigarettes are safe? Would you recommend them to your friends who smoke? Do you think they are a good smoking cessation method? I would love to hear what you have to say.
