a new beginning, same ole politics...
Typically I would try and refrain from writing about politics, for various reasons. But last night was momentous in US history and I wanted to make sure it was recorded (before the Cheney's get their hands on it). ;)
It was refreshing to be honest to watch the Democrats this once stiffen their backbones and show the finger to their Republican counterparts. After being hammered for the last HUNDRED years, who would've ever thought that a team of an African-American President & a 69 year old Woman would get this accomplished! Why haven't we thought about this before? It was an amazing display of sheer resilience learnt over years of being looked down upon as a black politician & a woman combined with political genius. Obama-Pelosi have truly brought by an awakening to minority folks. Wake up and stand strong! Don't let the negative get to you.
Watching the Healthcare debate for about a year now, the culmination of it last night was reminisce of the previous Republican administrations - must have guns to protect from burglars & thieves, must go to war or the terrorists will infiltrate, must have small government or else it'll lead to socialism, must pay & pray to church or the wrath of god will be upon you, must shew away all the immigrants or they'll take your jobs, education is for the elite & progressives, the list goes on.
Rep. John Boehner's appropriately named "Hell No!" speech was almost hysterical with his arguments, focusing on well, "No We Can't". One must tip their hat off in his splendid use of negation in almost every other sentence. How do the use of words such as - sad & heavy heart, last straw, wreckage, fail (used 5 times), cannot (used 12 times), no (used 10 times), last straw, weaken, funding of abortion, hidden from the people, help folks who are the most vulnerable and need a glimmer of hope and change? Does that mean that if this bill will take time or has no chance in hell on making the system better AND save thousands of lives, it should be looked down upon and not be tackled? There was never once a focus on the positives. If this “... decision we make will affect every man, woman and child in this nation for generations to come." shouldn't it be made sooner than later?
Hell Yes! Agreed there must be faults in the bill, but nothing I'm told is perfect, especially in politics, in life.. no? This is where optimism comes into play. We understand the pitfalls and yet, against all odds we go for it believing that it will all come together in the end, OR, we will make it happen. Aren't entrepreneurs made up of this stuff? You may call it a gamble, guess work... but don't forget, its the exact same spirit that formed this country, people who believed that they could leave all they had, travel the seas and make a positive impact on their lives.
I ask my republican peeps, where is that spirit lost?
