With the help of my friend, Christie Phillips, I am starting a new section of the blog called “Healthy Tips of the Week”. This is not a health blog, as you can see in this post about fried sweetbread tacos, but we do try, as a family, to eat healthy most of the time. I have learned so much from Christie and her enthusiasm for living a healthy life that I wanted to share it with you. This is her newsletter. It usually contains tips and techniques on how to make wiser choices about food, links to recipes, and events happening in Orange County that pertain to health and well-being. Enjoy!
Breaking News: Massive Tumors in Rats Fed GMO Corn in First Ever Long Term Study
Genetically engineered corn was linked to mammary tumors, kidney and liver damage and other serious illnesses in the first ever peer reviewed, long term animal study of these foods. The findings were published today in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology. Numerous peer-reviewed short-term animal studies (90 days) have found adverse impacts in animals including allergies, liver and kidney problems and other health problems. What can you do? Look for “non-GMO” on the packaging (otherwise assume it’s GMO) especially with products containing corn and soy. Trader Joe’s is free of GMO products. You can also vote ‘yes’ on Proposition #37 to label genetically engineered food to protect your right to know if you are eating GMO food. For the full study abstract (warning: rat pictures with massive tumors are graphic, my apologies!), go to http://research.sustainablefoodtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Final-Paper.pdf

Healthy Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
The bananas and applesauce make these muffins sweet and moist! Modify this recipe by using whole wheat flour and cutting the brown sugar in half. My little one and I made these this week, put them in fall muffin tin shapes for his class and they were YUMMY!
