Although I will not be traveling to the BlogHer conference, thousands of BlogHers and other travelers will hit the road this weekend to get to the relaxation destination of their choice. Whether you are taking the Greyhound to Chicago, Amtrak to New York, or flying to some exotic locale many time zones away, here's some tips to ensure a healthy kick-off to your vacation:
Tips for Healthy Air Travel:
* Carry enough of all of your medicines in your carry-on luggage. Ask your doctor whether you should change your dosages if your eating and sleeping times will change at your destination. Bring enough medicine to last your whole trip. Take extra medicine with you in case your return trip is delayed.
* If you have diabetes or epilepsy, carry a notification and identification card (such as the "Diabetes Alert Card" from the American Diabetes Association). Have the name and phone number of your doctor with you in case of an emergency. Remember to bring along the names and dosages of all of your medicines.
* The air in airplanes is dry, so drink nonalcoholic, decaffeinated beverages and water to avoid becoming dehydrated.
Tips for Overseas Travel:
* Plan ahead. See your doctor at least 6 weeks before you leave. Some vaccines don't reach the highest protection until about 6 weeks after you get the shots.
* Have medical and dental check-ups before your trip, to be aware of problems and to find out about medicines you might want to take along.
* Be prepared. Find out what your health insurance will pay for if you see a doctor while you're in another country. Carry enough of your regular medicines in their original containers, along with extra prescriptions for them. Also bring your eyewear prescriptions. Wear a medical information bracelet if needed. Take along a first-aid kit (see suggestions below).
And finally, exercises to keep your blood flowing while in transit (to only be done as a passenger, do NOT attempt to drive and exercise):
* Ankle twirls
Lift your feet and twirl your feet in a circular fashion for several seconds.* Foot pumps
Keep your heels on the floor and lift your toes as high as possible for a few seconds and repeat as desired.* Knee lifts
Hold your knee with both hands and lift your knee toward your chest. Hold this stretch for 15 seconds and let your knee down. Repeat with the other knee.* Finger and toe stretch
Clench fingers (toes) inward and then stretch them outward. Repeat several times with hands and feet.* Shoulder rolls
Lift your shoulders upward and then move them in a circular fashion for about 30 seconds.* Neck roll
Drop your right ear toward your right shoulder and gently roll your head forward to the left side. Then roll your head in the same fashion toward the right side. Repeat several times.* Hug stretch
Bring your right hand over your left shoulder and your left hand behind your right elbow. Gently pull the elbow toward your body and hold for a few seconds. Do the same with your left elbow. Repeat several times.
