The Heartbleed Checklist: The Passwords You Should Change (INFOGRAPHIC & VIDEO)
By Nataly Auger on April 12, 2014
The Heartbleed bug has taken the internet by storm when the major security vulnerability was announced this week and users are rushing off to change their passwords. Even though the OpenSSL encryption software isn't used by all service providers, many use it and may be at risk.
Many users, including me, didn't know what OpenSSL meant. Furthermore, we weren't sure what was going on and what we had to do to be safe again. Should we change our passwords right away? Should we wait? And what passwords exactly should we change? All of them?
It seems that the encryption flaw has been around for two years now which is not very reassuring. By now, fortunately most of the service providers have patched their servers to resolve the issue. If you want to know more in depth about Heartbleed, that some call one of the biggest security threat that the Internet has ever faced, Mashable has made a video that explains it very clearly:
Now that the dust has settled, we begin to learn more about OpenSSL. Many websites have wrote articles about the subject and we now understand this security threat better and how it works. Moreover, some checklists have been created to help us sort it all out.
Below, you have a password change checklist, created by IVPN, where you will find all the information you need about some of the major websites and services providers. You will find:
- Site names
- Are they affected?
- Do they have patched the issue?
- Should you change your password?
- What else should you do?
So there you have it! This checklist should be an excellent tool to help you unravel what passwords you should change. However, if a service provider didn't apply the patch yet, you should not change your password. Wait until you are sure they have fix the issue. Hope this list will be of use.
