Heartless Bastards in Columbus, Ohio

Last night, Joel and I had tickets to see the Heartless Bastards in Columbus.  We went all out thanks to some coupons-- a free night of dog boarding and a free night at a Marriott!  It was really nice to go out without worrying about the pets, and we had a great time at the concert.

The best part, we both agreed, was how similar the band sounded to their studio albums.  I hate when you get to a concert and the sound is completely different than what you're expecting.  The Heartless Bastards sounded wonderful and Joel turns to me and screams "I'm obsessed with her voice!" halfway through the set.  Erika Wennerstrom is from Dayton and yes, she has one killer voice.  They played most of our favorites, and it was a great trip.  Up above is a video of them playing "Out at Sea" on David Letterman-- the second song they played last night.  The sound isn't that great in the video, but it gives you a good sense of her voice and their music!

Another crucial part of the show was the size of the venue.  We've been very lucky in our venues in Columbus-- both the Newport and the Basement have been great locations! We're still iffy on the LC Pavilion (since they made us watch Mumford and Sons in a parking lot) but we're headed back there for the Avett Brothers in May, so hopefully the venue will redeem itself.
