The Heath Care Summit: Are You Watching?

"Political theater" or a chance for bi-partisanship?

Leaders from both sides of the aisle are gathering today at Blair House to talk health care reform, at the invitation of President Barack Obama.

The summit will be televised causing a stir, and much satire.

With the world watching, both Republicans and Democrats have a lot at stake in today's meeting. Either side could leave a poor impression with the public as bickering over the House and Senate version of legislation continues, and results will be expected.

NPR has a rundown of what's at stake. Maggie Mertens at Kaiser Health News has a series of charts with comparisons of the current proposals and past proposals. While Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the White House Office of Health Reform, pen an op-ed in the Washington Post angling for each side to come together today.

Over the past year, we've had a vigorous national conversation about how to bring down health-care costs for families, hold insurance companies accountable, make health-care affordable for those who don't have it and lower the deficit. Today, Democrats and Republicans have a chance to come together, share their best ideas and unite behind reforms that will put families and small-business owners back in control of their health care.

As you watch today on C-SPAN or at whitehouse.gov - do you think anything will come of this summit? Join BlogHer as we spend the day peaking-in on the summit and it's rhetoric, politics, and possible outcome.

As someone that was a fulltime caregiver for nearly 7 years I had to find an insurance plan on my own. And I could not. Because I had acne in my early 20's. Yup. When I finally became pregnant I was able to get state maternity insurance and was given wonderful care. Even now as I search for a job my son is on state insurance and while it was a tough battle to get him enrolled I am glad to have it.

I just wonder when people will realize that the folks that are suffering are not some abstract and anonymous people but their neighbors, friends, the people in line ahead of you at the grocery store.

Trotting out Tom Coburn is not a sign Republicans want to get anything done or have any real ideas to offer up. That man is so conservative it borders on delusion. Undercover patients?! Utilization of the system = extortion? My ears don't believe what they've heard.

Since my husband has been laid-off now for two years we are coming off of Cobra soon and have to get our own policy. Between the Dwarfism and my daughter's condition(Turners Syndrome) we have struck out with getting approved for a policy. I am not asking for a hand-out from the government but I believe insurance companies should not deny people because of pre-existing conditions. My husband and I go to the doctor less than most of society but because of our genetic condition we cannot get a policy. That's crap I am sorry. Many Americans are in the same boat and it's time the government put some safe guards into our healthcare system!
