Is That You, Dad?

"Hi! It's Dad," said the warm, senior voice on the other end of the line.

And just for a tiny second, I pretended that he really was my dad, just calling to check in and say hi.  What a sweetheart, I thought; he sounded really glad to hear my voice. Maybe he wanted to make dinner plans or ask me how I was doing during these last few days of the school year.  Maybe he was just calling to tell me he loved me, or to ask what I've been up to lately.

Of course, he wasn't the exactly right age, though, and Dad never sounded glad to hear my voice when I called the house. ("Here's your mother," was the usual greeting.)  Besides, Dad passed away six years ago.

"Sorry, wrong number," I said warmly.  Sheepishly, he apologized.

"No problem."

Because, really, I enjoyed the split-second fantasy; it was kind of nice.

Thanks, Forever17! That never occurred to me. I do believe that my dad loved me; he just had a really hard time showing it. I'm going to choose to believe he showed it last night :)

That's sweet Victoria. That would be nice and I'm sure helps with healing.

You remind me of the fact that I'm so glad my friend whose son passed away hasn't changed her outgoing voicemail message--It is the voice of her old, cheerful, upbeat self, which gives me hope that she will one day heal enough to sound happy again.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I am a huge believer in "Everything happens for a reason"
And maybe you needed a little pick me up, even if it wasn't the real deal. I have never heard those words myself, and sometimes I wish I had. I think maybe it was Your Dad, just letting you know he was thinking of you. Our Angels are always around.

It is very hard to lose a loved one and I think we all sometimes have that fantasy. I think it's harder as we get closer to Father's day. Sine my father passed away my Mother never changed the voicemail on their shared cel phone. Every now and then I call it just to hear his voice and have that special memory.

victorias_view My stepmother deleted everything the day after Dad died. I'd be only to happy to hear his voice again. He's been gone over 10 years, but I still dream I can hear him talking to me.
