Hello, My Name is ______
by Tammy Donroe

Hi BlogHer.  It’s me.  Tammy from Food on the Food.  Not ringing any bells?  That’s okay.  They asked me to write a few things here every so often starting today, so here I go.  Why don’t we begin with a few fun facts about me to help us get better acquainted:

  • I like food.  Let’s just get that out in the open right now.  I like it a lot.
  • I enjoy cooking, but let’s not lose sight of the reason why I’m in the
kitchen in the first place.  I’m there because I’m hungry.  And bad
things happen when I get hungry.  It’s a little bit like watching the
Incredible Hulk transformation, except you feel little to no empathy at
all because I just ate two hours ago.  Suck it up, woman.  How hungry
can you be?  And, for god’s sakes, go put a shirt on.
  • When I first starting cooking, I was just out of college and I found
the whole process mysterious and daunting.  Culinary school took away
some of the mystery (but not all of it, thank god—I like mystery), and
practice whittled away at some of the fear.  Now, I find cooking to be
empowering and nurturing and a way to immerse myself in one of life’s
    greatest pleasures.
  • I have two sons, ages 6 and 3.  They’re normal kids.  They will always
choose hot dogs, peanut butter, and macaroni and cheese over anything I
cook from scratch.  However, I’m the one in charge of mealtime, and so
they get lots of fruits, vegetables, and meat from the farms in our
area, interspersed with the occasional hot dog and Gorton’s fish stick
to keep them from getting completely demoralized by good nutrition.
The parenting experts may balk, but they’re not the boss of me.
  • I think our food system stinks in many important ways.  Family farms
are disappearing at an alarming rate.  Corporations (aided by
confounding government policy) are eroding consumer rights and access
to a safe food supply.  Our collective health is deteriorating.  We grow a lot of
food in this country quantity-wise, but only a few different kinds.  It
would be like your favorite ice cream shop doubling their output, but
limiting the selection to only vanilla and strawberry.  Artificially
flavored, of course.  And only crappy soft-serve.  But what about
cookie-dough, you might ask?  Butter pecan?  Double-fudge-brownie-dulce-de-leche-peanut-butter-cup mashup?  You’re shit out of luck.  That’s
what our future is coming to: a world without delicious ice cream.
Think about that the next time you read about the plight of the small
    farmers.
  • Oh yeah, I love ice cream!
  • Also, I can be a hypocrite sometimes.  You can call me on it.  Someone always does.
  • I cook from blogs a lot.  The Internet has become such a great resource
for cooking inspiration, I daresay that may be the very best use for it
in these modern times (besides the obvious dissemination of educational
    porn).

Is anyone still there?  Hello?  Well, anyway, here are a few of my favorite recipes I’ve made from blogs recently, using whatever seasonal ingredients I can get my hands on here in New England:

Molly Stevens’ creamy, braised Brussels sprouts up on Orangette, one of my favorite recipes.

Lamb kefta (meatballs) with yogurt sauce from Smitten Kitchen.

White bean, winter squash, and kale soup from Culinate, although I cut the amount of squash in half.

Portuguese carrot salad from Straight from the Farm.

YAY!

Tammy is one of my favoritest food bloggers.  Glad to see you up and running here, and, as ALWAYS, you made me laugh.  :D

Hi, Tammy

I love food too.  Last night after being harrassed for cake by my husband and son, I made the Hershey's cocoa cake with cocoa frosting.  What a great recipe.  So decadent.

Nice to meet you

We're in the middle on healthy and appealing vs. cheap and appealing. Mainly because I'm lazy. Unfortunately the really good stuff is really expensive when you're buying for 9 people.

But that is so.not.the.point! I am looking forward to reading your posts! And just to say this also: my eldest step-son is attending the Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Pasadena, CA. And it's always interesting when he comes home and brings along his latest 'school work'.

Hi Tammy, I love your blog,  I love to eat, love to cook and always stress over getting fruits and veggies in all three of my sons, ages 15 , 11 and 3.  looking forward to read more from you

Excellent!

I think I have a recipe for that...

Look forward to seeing which blogs you find to share!  One can never have enough food blogs to read...

Thanks, everyone!

Kazari: Are you sure?  Be careful what you wish for!!

Tracy: Thanks for the welcome.  I'll check out your blog -- I love a good gaffe!

Michele: Yes, it is always a challenge with kids, isn't it?  I'll head over and check out your blog, too.

chaosinthekitchen: Thanks, loyal reader!  Hope you don't get too sick of me.

Annalumor: Glad you liked the tortilla soup post.  I learned my lesson.  When looking for something in the kitchen, always check the ceiling fan first.

Kian: I don't think you can get away with calling yourself lazy with 7 kids (did I do the math right?).  Looking forward to reading exactly how you manage this.

JC: Yes, chocolate cake has magical properties.  So nice of you to succumb to the friendly harrassment.

alosha: What would I do without your lovely comments?!

Kalyn: So happy to be here.  Thanks for making me feel at home!

repliderium: Thank you.  I'll be sure to check out your site as well.

P.S. I know I do the comments backwards, but I've always done them that way.  I'd like to think there's a very good reason.

Hot Dogs and Macaroni and Cheese

Hot dogs and mac & cheese are important!  They're probably the first foods that my boys (10 & 12) cooked themselves.  They are also my "mommy doesn't feel like cooking" fall backs.

We love ice cream, too, though I do tend to buy just vanilla/chocolate/strawberry because I have this rule that says if my eyes start to glaze over while I'm reading the ingredient list -- it goes back in the case.  But, we do it Cold Stone style over here - I let the boys mix in a bunch of (pre approved) goodies into their ice cream to make it whatever flavor they're in the mood for.

Cool!

I love to read fun stuff, and foodie stuff is even better!! Loved your post! :)

Isn't ice cream one of the 4 food groups?!!!

Hola, fellow food freak!

Are you my long lost twin?

Really appreciate the comments

purple goddess: Quite possibly!

Melissa: I could make an entire food pyramid out of ice cream if I really applied myself.

Marianne: I actually share my kids' love of hot dogs, but macaroni and cheese makes me gag, which makes no sense.  What's not to like when there's actual genuine cheese involved?  But you can't reason with a gag reflex.

hello hello

can't wait to see what you have stewin' in the kitchen.

Squash

Great recipes - they look delicous! Thanks for posting. I am confused as to why one would ever decrease the amount of squash called for in a recipe! I always double - our triple! Am I the only one who is CRAZY about the 'gourd?

Haha, look forward to trying out the recipes!
